Proteins are not so good for your health: the disturbing result that alarms those who go to the gym

The dangers of excessive protein consumption in the diet have been highlighted in a new study by the University of Pittsburgh, causing concern among experts and the public. Published in the journal Nature Metabolism, the study reveals that consuming too much protein can increase the risk of atherosclerosis, a potentially serious artery disease.

Experts advise consuming protein between 15 and 22% of daily calories to avoid activating immune cells and triggering the formation of atherosclerotic plaque. Experiments on healthy individuals have shown that exceeding the recommended protein intake can lead to detrimental effects on immune cells, particularly macrophages.

Researchers emphasize the importance of balancing protein intake and not exceeding recommended levels to prevent the accumulation of cells in artery walls. Babak Razani, a researcher involved in the study, warns that increasing protein intake for better metabolic health may not be beneficial and could actually harm the arteries.

Razani calls for a conversation on modifying diets to influence bodily function at a molecular level and reduce the risk of disease. The study’s findings highlight the need for caution in consuming excessive protein and underline the importance of a balanced diet under the guidance of healthcare professionals.
