Rector Mariotti’s recipe: “” Sardinian “share in medicine”

by admin

The number 1 of the University of Sassari: «Our students unprepared for the tests. The idea is to work with high school students of the last two years who dream of a white coat ”

SASSARI. It is useless to turn around the subject, the numbers do not lie: since 1999, when after a long series of appeals the decree signed in 1987 by the then minister Ortensio Zecchino which established the “programmed number” in the medical faculties came into force, the Sardinian doctors have inexorably dropped. A problem that manifests itself already at the time of the entrance test and then drags itself into specialization schools, where equally Sardinians, forced to confront colleagues from all over Italy, struggle to find a place.

This triggers a devastating domino effect: “For years we use our resources to train doctors who, as soon as they complete their studies, go home – comments bitterly the rector of the University of Sassari, Gavino Mariotti -: the lack of however doctors is a national problem and it is clear that our graduates have several opportunities available. They are very popular and do not think much about choosing. So most of them leave and we in Sardinia find ourselves without doctors ». To this problem in the training path we could also add the discourse concerning the job offer of our health system, which obviously does not seem very attractive, but is still another story compared to the low numbers of Sardinian graduates. The rector of Sassari agrees on the current emergency and adds that there are only two paths that can be taken: “Intervening at the root of the problem by strengthening the training of our students from high school or acting immediately imperial by marrying the proposal presented by Senator Carlo Doria some month ago. One is more immediate but I have no preferences, the important thing is to do something immediately ». Bipartisan proposal to which the other island senators have joined (and immediately married by the two Sardinian universities) which asks for “an extraordinary provision to derogate from the rule by requiring at least for the next two academic years to enroll an adequate number of students between the two Sardinian universities compared to the places assigned annually by the ministry. These places must be reserved for those born in Sardinia or resident for at least 5 years prior to the application, and access must include a selective test with a preferential title for those who have already taken the admission exam before “.

Meanwhile, the rector of Uniss is moving on the side that most concerns him, the formative one: «In recent days I had an interview in the Region with the councilor Alessandra Zedda – he explains -. The idea is to arrive at a Por thanks to which our University would take charge of the training of future doctors already in the last years of high school. It would be a matter of working in the fourth and fifth year with those guys who already have the idea of taking the entrance test and giving them a preparation that at this moment, unfortunately, is missing because the number of Sardinians who overcome this first obstacle is very low and it certainly cannot be a coincidence ”.
