Victoria for childbirth; Apollo with the ultrasound module; Lungsim for mechanical ventilation, EigenFlow for extracorporeal circulation Ecmo. These are some of the hyper-realistic mannequins adopted by the Gemelli Training Center of the Fondazione Policlinico Universitario Agostino Gemelli IRCCS for the training of young doctors. The devices were presented today in an event that saw the participation of Luca Argentero, protagonist of the fiction ‘Doc, in your hands’ broadcast on Rai 1.

“The learning of what we call ‘practical skills’ today, unlike in the past, can be acquired on a simulator, in order to preserve the patient from possible errors or unnecessary maneuvers”, said the director of Gemelli Training. Center Raffaele Landolfi. “Today it is possible to experiment on a simulator, to the point of learning a surgical technique, an obstetric or resuscitator ‘maneuver’ in the smallest details, before performing it on a patient in flesh and blood”. The new instrumentation, in addition to hyper-realistic mannequins, provides integration with virtual reality and allows you to create immersive experiences of great impact. This allows learning in difficult conditions such as in the case of trauma, traffic accidents or natural disasters. “The impression gained from putting your hands on these mannequins was truly extraordinary, given their incredible realism,” said Luca Argentero, who wanted to try his hand at some maneuvers on the mannequins. For the scientific director of the Gemelli Polyclinic Foundation Giovanni Scambia, “simulation is the future of medical education. Any center that proposes to do high-level pre and post-graduate education cannot fail to have these tools”.

The simulation also allows “the reanalysis of behavior”, added Massimo Antonelli, director of the Department of Emergency, Anesthesiology and Resuscitation Sciences at the Gemelli Polyclinic. “It is the so-called debriefing, a methodology that allows you to reanalyze the various steps to understand where you can improve and where you have to avoid some mistakes”.
