At the Cheltenham Science Festival, Lord Rees told British media that humans will almost certainly be “replaced” by artificial intelligence super robots within the next millennium. “The search for extraterrestrial intelligence is likely to reveal something very different from us,” he said. “What do we imagine those creatures were like? I think if we find anything… it wouldn’t be a flesh-and-blood civilization like ours, and It’s robotics and electronic stuff.”
Lord Rees said, “The robots we are creating today are the first steps on the road to a civilization of synthetic artificial intelligence lifeforms that will last far longer than humans can. Centuries…1000 years…we will be replaced by electronic entities that will be near immortality and can continue to exist for the remainder of the universe’s history.”
He added, “The same process has likely been played out on other planets in the Milky Way, another planet with life, probably far behind Earth, with no evidence of intelligence, or very advanced, and if that’s the case we’ll see Remote electronic descendants of some long-dead civilization”.
Seth Shostak, an expert at the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Project (SETI), agrees that any interstellar traveler will leave their biological bodies far behind, the first aliens humans encounter. Entities will be artificial, not biological. “Given that they’re more likely to be machines than creatures, it’s hard to tell what they’ll be interested in,” he said.
Meanwhile, in a NASA news conference, newly appointed NASA administrator Bill Nelson said an investigation into whether aliens have visited Earth is already underway. There have been “hundreds” of sightings of unexplained aerial phenomena or UFOs in recent years, he said, “and we take that very seriously.” He promised NASA would “address this from a scientific perspective, because we are a scientific research organization”.
