Sassari, nurses are not enough and someone leaves their jobs

Lack of staff, exhausting shifts. Many are looking for staff

SASSARI. Looking for nurses. Desperately, or almost. The job advertisements, also in the weekly insert de The New Sardinia, often involve the search for care and health professionals. It seems that nurses have become a very rare commodity and this situation is perhaps produced by a number of causes which, at this moment, are all converging creating a kind of perfect storm. And the situation could also worsen, at least according to the forecasts of Fabrizio Anedda, regional coordinator of the Nursind union: «« The shortage of personnel? It is a legacy of the past, perhaps worsened in the last year ».

Little personnel and a lot of work: and so absurd situations are being created: «We have many cases of colleagues who have resigned because they found themselves facing an unlivable working condition. This happens above all in large hospitals, where most of the activity is concentrated ».

According to the latest Istat data available in 2017, the employees of the National Health Service in Sardinia numbered 20,963, of which about 40 per cent (8,294) represented by nurses and about 20 per cent (4,216) by medical personnel. But since then the situation has worsened: «The shortage is long-standing, the criteria for accreditation have never been met – says Anedda -. Then came the 100 quota law which further reduced the staff. Many who have retired have never been replaced. First there was the blocking of the turnover, then the unblocking at 50 percent, but no public competitions were made. Finally, the suspensions arrived for those who have not been vaccinated. In short, the number of nurses is lower than the need. Which is huge ».

What is happening? According to the union of nurses we are witnessing a sort of “cannibalization” between companies, which grab the staff. “This creates problems for public companies, but also for private ones. The serious effects of this state of affairs will soon be seen better. Public places are more coveted and those who have the opportunity will leave the private facilities. A situation that will weigh on clinics, RSA, cooperatives ».

What corrective measures can be taken to get out of the emergency? «A socio-sanitary worker is found, the nurses are not – says the coordinator of Bursind -. There is a blockage of access to universities and this does not allow for the introduction of new staff in sufficient numbers into the labor market. We are worried: colleagues no longer hold their shifts, the additional performance is out of control, it is no longer sufficient. They were born to face the emergency, but it is a system that cannot be maintained forever ».

Here is the recipe of the Nursind, which however cannot have immediate effects: “We need to intervene with an increase in the number of places in universities, to have as many professionals as possible and to remedy a shortage that starts from afar”.

The emergency, at least in the short and medium term, is destined to remain. Perhaps even to accentuate: «We no longer have the possibility of guaranteeing what the national health system provides. We were at the limit even before the pandemic, now the situation is unmanageable in some hospitals. Now that the emergency is waning, the performances will have to be recovered, the interventions postponed in this period. And it will be another problem ».

According to Nursind, it is difficult to estimate the shortage of staff: «If we rely on accreditations, there should be a shortage of about 2,500 nurses. But if you take the parameters according to which there should be a nurse for every 6 patients, then the estimate jumps to more than 4 thousand. How can we recover them if about 350 new graduates leave Sardinian universities every year? It is necessary to act on the limited number, but also on the palatability of the profession. Which at the moment is scarce: we are talking about a risky and poorly paid job ».

Another estimate to be made: that of the nurses suspended for not having undergone anti Covid vaccination: «We asked for them, but they didn’t give them to us. Many have marched back, others have insisted and are suspended. Even those with a single dose. And we believe this is not right ».
