Scampia, the Municipality ends the work of the Medicine office after 16 years

New training center in Scampia thanks to an acceleration of the works given by the mayor Gaetano Manfredi after 16 years of work. The construction site of the Federico II University, which will host the degree courses in health professions, has been officially closed. After a revision of the project carried out two years ago, the current Municipal Administration had undertaken to hand over the structure to the Frederick University to allow it to inaugurate the new academic year 2022/2023. With the handover of the building, the commitment was maintained and therefore students will be able to register to attend the Scampia facility already in mid-September.

The construction works of the new headquarters were carried out following the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding of 5 April 2006 intervened between the Campania Region, the Municipality of Naples and the University of Naples Federico II, as part of the project of redevelopment of the Scampia district. A profitable investment by the Region of about 50 million euros was made and the Municipality co-financed the intervention with almost 7 million euros. With this protocol, the three subscribers agreed on the construction of a new site to host both degree courses of the School of Medicine and assistance activities. Based on the architect’s project Vittorio Gregotti the entire building complex, where the Vela H in Scampia once stood, is spread over an area of approximately 10,000 square meters, for a built area of 21,380 square meters. In it there are information points, dining areas, a college store, newsstands, secretarial spaces; also at this altitude there is the large Aula Magna for about 600 seats and 15 classrooms; on the first and second floors there are other classrooms (a total of 1500 seats), a large library and didactic and multimedia laboratories; the third, fourth and fifth floors are intended to accommodate health functions. The operation underwent subsequent adjustments and settlements as a result of the progress of the works which, however, considerably slowed down its implementation, resulting in the administrative termination of the allocated sums.

The opening of a new training center in Scampia is part of a large integrated social project that the Administration has implemented for the district and the entire northern area of the city. There are in fact the Restart-Scampia urban regeneration project, il urban green requalification program, construction of the cycle path and adequate implementation of the transport system. «These are all factors that go in the same direction: making a territory with great potential fertile by bringing training and economic development. We were able to speed up the pace to give a strong signal of change in this sense. We will immediately initiate an interview with the representative realities of the territory so that there is a useful and concrete impact for the community », the comment of the mayor Gaetano Manfredi.

«With great satisfaction, Federico II takes delivery of the Scampia property in time to activate the services necessary to populate the site with students and teachers during the first semester of next year. A new phase therefore opens up for the history of medicine in our ancient university and for a territory that needs a relaunch based on culture, knowledge and training. We thank the Municipality of Naples, for having managed the construction of the work, the Campania Region, for having financed the project, and all the institutional actors involved as well as the many professionals who over the years have made a useful and necessary contribution to achieve this. important goal. We look forward to welcoming our students as soon as possible », says Matteo Lorito, rector of the University of Naples Federico II.
