Sergio Alfieri, from the school of the “Pope’s surgeons” – Health

Sergio Alfieri, the surgeon who was entrusted with the task of operate Pope Francis at the Gemelli Polyclinic in Rome for one symptomatic diverticular stenosis of the colon, has conducted more than 9,000 surgeries to date.

It comes from the direct line and from the school of surgeons close to the popes. Alfieri was in fact a pupil of the surgeon Giovanni Battista Doglietto, who in turn was in the team of Francesco Crucitti, who went down in history as the surgeon of John Paul II for having operated on him three times.

Alfieri in particular dedicated himself to colorectal surgery, developing minimally invasive techniques (laparoscopic and robotic) with a percentage that today stands at 85%.

He is also an expert in pancreatic surgery, severe acute pancreatitis, stomach surgery, but also surgery of the abdominal and pelvic masses and surgery of liver metastases from colorectal cancer.

Alfieri, who will turn 55 next December, from Rome, born professionally at the Gemelli school where he graduated with full marks in 1992, is Associate Professor in General Surgery since 2010 and Full Professor of General Surgery since 2018.

Head of the Digestive Surgery Complex Operative Unit and Coordinator of the Colon Rectal Surgery Center and Pancreas Surgery Center of Gemelli, he has a curriculum that sees hundreds of scientific publications and many experiences in important clinical centers abroad. He recently conducted an analysis on the critical issues related to hospitalization and the onset of complications for colon surgery. Patients define him as kind, punctual and professional, he was talked about in the newspapers for an emergency intervention in Vittorio Cecchi Gori in 2019.
