Shingles takes advantage of the decline in immune defenses

At least 2 out of 10 people don’t know what the Fire of saint Anthony and one in two says they know little. Yet, nearly 2 in 3 know others who have suffered from it, and 12% have actually had it. These are some of the data that emerged from a global survey promoted by Gsk on the occasion of International Herpes Zoster Awareness Weekin program from 26 February to 3 March 2024.

Herpes zoster is an infectious disease triggered by the reactivation of the virus that causes chickenpox. 90% of adults have already contracted the chickenpox virus and are therefore potentially at risk of developing shingles. Reactivation is usually associated with a painful skin rash which, although it can occur anywhere on the body, appears more frequently on just one side of the chest or abdomen in the form of a single streak of blisters.

Today there is a Vaccine which allows us to prevent this pathology, which can have a profound impact on the lives of people and their families. This is why it is important that the adult population, and in particular those who are fragile and at risk, contact their doctor for guidance on how to recognise, understand and reduce the risk of developing this debilitating disease.

There is numerous scientific evidence that shows limportance of vaccination for vulnerable categories. The elderly undergo immunosenescence (physiological decline in the functionality of the immune system), but in addition to being recommended for the over-65s, vaccination is recommended and offered in an freeeven to subjects with chronic pathologies, including diabetes, rheumatological diseases, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

In fact, there is precise clinical evidence that shows how the presence of these pathologies increases the risk of developing Herpes Zoster infection. Furthermore, the vaccine is recommended for people who are immunosuppressed due to therapies such as those against tumors.
