Smart working and holidays, Italians want more and more data

by admin

In the second house, by the sea or in the mountains, you go there a few days before your holidays and stay there for a while afterwards. There is so much smart working. This is what many Italians thought, given the boom in mobile data traffic and new activation of offers for surfing, in fact, on the move from second homes or other accommodations where you spend your holidays.
An analysis by Switcho, which has an app to save on fees, highlights the growth of virtual mobile operators in terms of the number of active SIMs and a 20% increase in data-only SIM activations. In short, we are talking about the sims that we insert into a Wi-Fi modem to navigate in a second home, where it may not be convenient – for short stays – to activate a fixed internet network. The data is confirmed by the estimates of Agcom (Communications Authority), which in the quarterly observatory published in July 2021 reports a continuous increase in traffic and mobile data sims.

Pandemic effect
Another Agcom study – traffic monitoring – released in July 2021 also indicates that data traffic on the mobile network has experienced a surge with Covid-19
: not only last year, during the lockdown, but also in this early summer. On the contrary, the data traffic on the fixed network, which grew a lot during the lockdown, has plummeted in recent weeks.
“The second summer season since the pandemic emergency began has had the obvious effect of consolidation of the phenomenon of remote work, with many Italians who have chosen to move their “home office” to second homes or in holiday resorts when the first heat arrives – explains Switcho in a note -. A trend that has also caused a less visible secondary effect: the significant increase in the need for Internet data by Italians ”.

The Switcho app between the months of June and July 2021 had a 160% increase (compared to the previous two months) in requests from users interested in changing mobile operators. The change is motivated by the search for aoffer with more GB and at lower prices.

“It is a summer of great excitement for the mobile and data market. Despite everything, people’s mobility has increased and users are looking for “richer” plans from the point of view of Internet data: this is the first driver of change ”explains Redi Vyshka, COO and co-founder of Switcho. He adds: “On our users, we observe that the” migration “almost always takes place from traditional operators to new generation operators: 9 out of 10 users choose to go online to digital operators, where they find, in addition to offers to take advantage of up to 40 gigabytes per month, savings that can reach up to 10 euros per month. Only Iliad and Fastweb, together, represent about 70% of the switches (“operator changes”) ”.
Agcom quarterly data confirm that Tim, Wind 3 and Vodafone are losing users to Iliad and virtual operators such as Poste Mobile.
Switcho also reports a growth of users with “Internet only” tariffs. “These are those who, moving to a holiday location for the summer months, are looking for high-performance but short-term Internet offers to continue working: this is the typical use case of those who activate a second SIM to use the smartphone come hotspot and continue working from the computer, ”explains Vyshka. A July 2021 study by SosTariffe confirms the increased popularity of mobile surfing rates. But also the drop in prices, thanks to Iliad and the virtual ones.

Away from the landline
SosTariffe indicates three ways to surf on holiday: the first two are data-only rates. In the first case, the Wi-Fi router is not included and costs around € 52.17, to be bought separately. In the second, the router is to be paid in installments, for a very low final cost (about 12 euros).
The data-only sims have on average 118 GB included and a monthly fee of 13.53 euros to which an activation cost of 6.25 euros must be added. The offers with router included have a little less GB, on average 90, a monthly fee of 13.49 euros to which to add 7.50 for activation.
The third solution is to buy an all-inclusive package with rechargeable SIM with minutes, sms and GB included (on average it’s 102 GB). Once the SIM has been purchased, we can use it also in this case with the help of a Wi-Fi router or a smartphone (which can also be used as a modem). In this case, there is a monthly fee of € 12.43, to which an activation fee is added € 6.31. The WiFi router, to be purchased separately by contacting a third-party retailer, has, on the other hand, an average cost of 55.65 euros. A choice designed for those who want to surf above all from their mobile phones.
