Squid Game is the streaming Netflix series of the moment. A series with a worldwide success, probably unexpected, which today, however, is no longer just a series, but has also become a social and social transversal phenomenon, involving children (unfortunately), adolescents and adults.

The series undoubtedly activates numerous reactions also from a psychological point of view, including the idealization of our childhood by making us open the drawer of memories. But, the fact that we are talking about games for children does NOT mean that it is a series suitable for them, although it has now entered their lives directly and indirectly. They are also already making a video game that will recall the contents of the series, Battle Royale style, which surely too many children and preteens will play. There are challenges already widespread in the main online platforms and there will certainly be at least another season. People are buying all kinds of gadgets: cookie cutters, children’s masks, T-shirts, cards etc … A hotel in South Korea is already organizing the live game, with no deaths of course, but with the same dynamics as the game.

The games represented in the series are basically a re-adaptation of the games of many children in a giant format, for adults to play.

In reality, when you play, simulate, there is fiction, you can go back, learn and start over; in Squid Game, on the other hand, the consequences for those who make mistakes, for those who lose, for those who don’t respect the rules have nothing to do with childhood, they are not in the least suitable and adequate for younger spectators. In fact, the series is forbidden to children under the age of 14, but the prohibitions in our country too often are an indication for their own sake. What we may not know is that in Korea, the place where the series was produced and set, there is a lot of attention to the limits to avoid having these contents reach minors. Strict limits, fair I would say, and above all respected.

Putting stakes on the vision of specific contents is essential for the growth of the little ones. To be effective, a NO must be accompanied by a plausible, understandable and acceptable explanation. Many of you may be thinking that this attitude could however push them to search for what is forbidden, and in part it may be true, but this internal drive is still inherent in human nature, regardless of the limit that the parent sets. Maybe he fooled Mom and Dad because he somehow managed to see it anyway, but he knows it’s not correct. On the other hand, when this attention is not paid to what the child sees or when he gives in after numerous requests and is allowed to do what he wants because everyone does it and because it is tiring to fight, it means making all this lawful for him, including the learning that it will ensue.

Children and young people raised on bread and violence. How dangerous is normalization?

The problem is that children and young people are inserted into a world in which this has become their normality. Years ago a content of this type would have created a very strong emotional reaction in some children, it would have impressed them, even with the risk of traumatizing them, because they were not bombarded by other such continuous, repetitive and invasive stimuli. When, on the other hand, I make you play video games, even forbidden to children, where death and violence prevail, I make you watch those videos and those series, I allow you to feed on these contents in your brain, that condition becomes normal. . In fact, all too often today parents don’t even know what a child is looking at or not. Instead, in the past, having less aggressive-violent stimuli and contents, strong emotional reactions were activated in us, sometimes even of shock. Today these children are no longer impressed, the dead ones do not activate an adequate emotional reaction to the stimulus. Indeed, in Squid Game, as the characters are “humanized”, we know their name and their stories, the cruelty of the game takes a back seat.

The real problem is precisely this: children and adolescents are now addicted to violence, they are no longer touched by this type of images, because they know them from an early age.

The ability to discern between what is right and what is wrong, what is cruel and what is funny, they learn, or at least should, only over the years, in late adolescence, as well as the sense of the limit. It is therefore the task of adults, of the whole educating community, to make them understand that everything cannot be normal, even if it is “virtual”. In addition, these children live in a world based too much on extreme competitiveness, on perfectionism, on pathological selfishness. We have to work on moral conscience, on relational skills, because the problem is the filter and the filter of children is built by adults. Constant and continuous work must be done to contrast all this, because what creates pain cannot be seen as fun. Children must be protected, as well as adolescents. A child cannot watch a series that the parent has not seen, because there can be no containment and it becomes impossible to trigger a potential confrontation. The school must also work on this content to help them think critically. Today there is a repetition of stimuli, children and young people are literally bombarded, so it is really necessary to do a work of contrast by creating a network.

We should not be scandalized if children imitate Squid Game games. Imitation is the basis of learning, it is a natural process in children, it is a real form of learning. We now have numerous primary school teachers denouncing the revival of Squid Game games by their little pupils who punish the “losers” with physical violence. The problem is that children are completely immersed in these stimuli and are bombarded with them. This continuity and everyday life makes him introject these “normal” actions. We have to detoxify these children, we have to get them out of this world that is not normal. We cannot remove them from this society and bring them to another planet, but we can give them limits and values, containment, coherence and stability, which is what is lacking today in a society based on exaggerated competitiveness, on exaltation and on extremization. of everything.

This drift must be blocked or at least slowed down: children must be detoxified and made to grow again with different rhythms and with values, we must help them to see that there is and have more. It is necessary to do a constant counter-balance without giving way to fatigue, because it is much more tiring to manage a child who becomes normally violent or unknowingly violent than to educate him.
