Startup, Adriano’s adventure in Las Vegas

by admin

If you’re a tech geek, a nerd like me, or just plain curious, leaving for CES has much the same effect as when as a kid, your parents used to take you to a toy store. The wait and the journey mainly served to create very high expectations, to imagine all the wonders you would have found. The same goes for CES, the Consumer Electronics Show; because, spread over an area too large to visit in 4 days, there are real technological wonders, curiosities and brilliant ideas that someone has physically created. But first step back.

The wait

The 2022 edition arrived, in presence, after the only digital one of 2021, it was a bit like going to a very good restaurant after looking at the menu online for over a year. The desire to discover what was new in the world was a lot, but the path to get there was anything but simple. Removed the necessary bureaucratic formalities, we were not sure of leaving until the day before the flight, the one in which we swab. The CES takes place in the first week of January and throughout the month of December, every time I received an update email from the organizers, I opened it as one looks at poker cards, with the terror of reading the word “Canceled” . In a very transparent way, they have always communicated the various defections among the exhibitors who gradually added up due to Covid. The final balance was around 350 cancellations compared to 2200 in attendance, unfortunately, but understandably, many of the 350 cancellations were from large companies. For us at Domethics, on the other hand, there was no plan B, because the entire 2022 strategy is based on participation in the event, in addition to the fact that, for the first time, our Adriano project was awarded a prestigious award as the Innovation Award Honoree. So, negative buffer and off to Las Vegas.

The news

The first big change I find it just landed at McCarran Airport, and is that it is no longer called that, it has now become Harry Reid International Airport, named after Senator Harry Reid, the longest-lived in Nevada history, who passed away in late December.

The second, and even more glaring change is the number of people who populate the airport. Generally, Las Vegas airport is a cross between a casino lobby and a bus station, because the flow of travelers, players arriving and departing with internal flights, is always very chaotic, while this time very few people meet. , only a few employees who hurry to let us scroll to the baggage claim and then to the collection of the entrance badges.

And here’s the first hitch: it seems paradoxical, but one of the things that work worse at CES is their website, on which you have to register as exhibitors and upload all the information material on the product, in order to collect all the documentation. just got off the plane. After a quick check, I am invited, with their usual firm courtesy, to go to the other side of the city to collect the documentation; useless to complain and I head to the taxi stop.

The taxi driver is in the mood for small talk, they always are, and when they discover that you are Italian, and that it is not the first time you are in town (because otherwise the list of recommendations on clubs, shows and restaurants would start) the conversation usually lands. on politics or on direct or acquired Italian relatives. He is amazed that it is there for CES, because until the day before no one thought it would take place.

In fifteen minutes I am at Las Vegas City Center Tech West, to collect all the access documents, require the vaccination certificate and the result of the swab taken before departure. They issue me the access passes along with this year’s gadget, two quick tests for Covid 19, I ask if it is mandatory to do them and they answer me no, it’s just a gift. Two years ago it was a water bottle, an evolution of costumes.

The adventure

The CES starts on the 5th, but the first event is on the 3rd, the day of our arrival, in the afternoon, the Reveal of the Innovation Award 2022 is held at the Mandalay Bay convention center, an event in which journalists can preview the products that the jury of the CES judged them as the most innovative of 2022 and, full of pride and hope, we too are here with our product Adriano. The thing that always amazes me is the very minimal, not to say sparse, setting of the tables, a pole on which the name of the company and the product is headed and nothing more, only the fabric screens to create a kind of path. But the wonderful thing is that the meaning of this event is all here, a lot of concreteness, we go from talking to a Japanese journalist to a German blogger. Many TVs, many freelancers, special reporters that never like this year, will have to collect images and suggestions to be transmitted to their editorial offices. Our project, Adriano, was designed to recover old smartphones, but we are not the only ones to have presented a product that has sustainability as its ultimate goal, this year it is a theme present in almost all the winners, such as for example the shower that recovers and filters the water several times, reducing consumption by up to 80%.

And finally the moment of the inauguration arrives. Together with 30 other startups and innovative SMEs, we are part of the mission organized by the ITA (Italian Trade Agency, the division of Los Angeles), and the designated headquarters is that of Eureka Park, where, on a large part of the exhibition spaces of the Venetian Expo center, hundreds of innovative companies from all over the world come together. Historically, the team with the most representatives is the French one, and this year too they are no different. The attention that the Paris government pays to promoting its innovative startups and SMEs should also be deepened by our government. The most interesting projects, and it is clear from the queue of onlookers and journalists, this year, however, are English, from the drone for moving people, to the humanoid robot capable of having a conversation and, if necessary, pose with those who ask. a selfie.

that transforms smartphone, tablet or smart TV into a powerful and economical control center for all smart devices in the home through the dedicated app

Our Adriano is in excellent company: the Italian mission presented very interesting projects such as Hexagro’s vertical garden or Lightscience’s rapid blood tests. But above all, there is the climate of mutual discovery and comparison, not only between startups from the same country, but also with those of other nationalities, because there is the desire to circulate ideas, to make them grow, and this spirit of confrontation has never been lacking, despite the fact that the public is half that of normal years, indeed, perhaps never as this time there has been the desire to go and discover the other innovations presented. However, if I had to choose one and only one, I would undoubtedly choose a product that unknowingly solved a problem that in these years of pandemic has touched us all at least once, namely the embarrassment in relating to others, not knowing what level of confidence. to hold, how to greet each other. The organization of the Ces has thought of this dilemma, with the use of three simple stickers of different colors, to be applied on one’s entrance badge. Red dot, we greet each other from a distance, without touching each other, yellow dot, we can greet each other with the very American punch against fist; green stamp, a nice and classic handshake. A trivial but clear code for everyone, and suddenly, in 2022, at the height of Covid, personal relationships between strangers became simpler and without embarrassment. If this is not evolution.
