Stem cells: cord cells of former Cryo-Save customers in safety at FamiCord

by admin

Rome, April 14 (beraking latest news Salute) – “The umbilical cord stem cells of the former customers of ‘Cryo-Save Ag in liquidation’ are safely stored by the FamiCord Group”. This is what we read in a note Famicord, Europe’s leading biobank in the conservation of stem cells from umbilical cord, in which it informs all those who have signed a contract in Italy with the Swiss company ‘Cryo-Save Ag in liquidation’, for the custody and custody of stem cells from the umbilical cord of their children, to contact the Famicord Group for important updates. The initiative follows the alert sent in February by the Polish National Center of Tissue and Cell Banking to numerous European health institutions, so that customers of ‘Cryo-Save Ag in liquidation’ were informed that their samples are safely stored in the laboratories of the Famicord Group.

The decision to transfer the biological material was made by ‘Cryo-Save Ag in liquidation’, the original holder of the biological samples, due to a serious financial situation which, in 2019, led to the Swiss court filing for bankruptcy. The liquidation of the Swiss company is in progress. The potential closure of the Cryo-Save Ag laboratories would have jeopardized the safety of hundreds of thousands of samples entrusted to the biobank by families from many countries. To avoid the worst-case scenario and ensure the safety of the samples, Cryo-Save AG has therefore concluded a five-year contract for the conservation of biological material, also known as the Back-Up Agreement, with the FamiCord Group.

As a result, the samples were transferred to the brand new FamiCord Group laboratory in Poland. During the transport, under the supervision of a group of experts, the most rigorous technical, medical and legal standards were observed for the transfer of biological material. The cryogenic containers were equipped with special temperature sensors and each opening of the sample control container was videotaped. Furthermore, all transfers were covered by the FamiCord Group insurance policy, issued by a group of insurance companies.

“The FamiCord Group feels socially responsible and obligated to ensure the safety of samples. With little time to act and hundreds of thousands of samples to transport, the least we could do was to ensure the safe transport of Cryo-Save customer samples. Ag in liquidation ‘free of charge and following the best professional, medical and legally approved procedures, to safeguard parents and the future of their children “, explains Jakub Baran, CEO of the FamiCord Group. “We are confident that the service has been entrusted to the FamiCord Group due to the quality and safety standards, financial reputation and reliability that our company has demonstrated throughout its years of activity,” adds Baran.

After the samples were transferred, thousands of families wanted to receive reassurance from the FamiCord Group about the state of their children’s biological material. In order to provide parents with the most accurate information, the Group has started the manual verification of all the inventoried material. This process started on May 26, 2019 and ended on July 17, 2020. To ensure the accuracy of the process, sample checking was done manually, container by container. After checking 824.140 units, the FamiCord Group can confirm the overall good conditions of the sample. Minor problems were encountered with less than 0.3% of the units. Most of the problems identified are: traces of biological material on the outer surface of the package, signs of mechanical damage to the package, lack of control samples for analysis next to the main sample. All of these problems are a result of the preparation and cryopreservation methods used prior to the transfer of the samples at the FamiCord Group facility.

“The choice of the stem cell bank with which to enter into a new storage contract remains at the discretion of the customer. Having said that, the Famicord Group makes it possible for former Cryo-Save Ag customers to conclude a new contract for the storage of the material to be part of the Group. The contractual document is currently available in English, Spanish, Serbian, Italian, German, Hungarian and Bulgarian. For any further information, the FamiCord Group has arranged a telephone assistance service “, concludes the note.
