Stop hiccups with a special straw. Solves 92% of cases- breaking latest news

by admin

Other than friends who yell “Boo” at you to scare you and other “home” remedies, such as holding your breath as long as possible, now there is even a “device”, very simple in fact, that could help solve the annoying problem. It is an “instrument of aspiration and swallowing”, in short, an L-shaped straw (they called it HiccAway ,in short: «Hic» go away!).

Operation

But let’s see how it works and what is the mechanism of hiccups. Hiccups occur when the diaphragm and external intercostal muscles contract, causing rapid inhalation of air and, about 35 milliseconds later, sudden closure of the vocal cords, which results in the characteristic “hic”. The L-shaped rigid straw has a “mouthpiece” at one end and an adjustable cap with a pressure valve on the other. People with hiccups put the device in a glass of water and use it to sip it. The forced aspiration and the swallowing tool according to its inventors would stop the attacks by acting on the vagus nerve, which also controls the visceral part of the diaphragm, and on the phrenic nerve which controls the motor part.

Research

According to Ali Seifi, an associate professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, and co-author of a study in which the solution was tested, the tool works practically immediately and the effect lasts for several hours. To evaluate the device, the team analyzed responses from 249 volunteers, more than two-thirds of whom said they have hiccups at least once a month. The results of the study were published in Jama Network Open , but it must be said that the research has limitations, including the fact, by no means secondary, that it did not include a control group and was based on self-reported results.

When it becomes pathology

Beyond the possible strategies to counter it, it must be said that, on rare occasions, when it lasts over 48 hours, hiccups could be a sign that should not be underestimated. It is called “protracted hiccup,” which becomes “intractable hiccup” when it lasts for more than two months. It can cause insomnia, fatigue, weight loss, dehydration, and malnutrition. The list of diseases that can hide behind these prolonged forms is long and worrying. They range from stroke to tumors, to which the decidedly more banal gastric infection by Helicobacter pylorim is added; but Parkinson’s should also be added to alterations in the body’s electrolyte balance, renal insufficiency. Prolonged hiccups can also be caused by medical interventions, such as anesthesia or chemotherapy, or even investigations such as bronchoscopy. The treatment of hiccups is based in the first instance on the attempt to resolve the underlying disease but there is also the possibility of resorting to some drugs, to be taken on prescription and under strict medical supervision.

But in children it can be useful

Hiccups are more common in children and become increasingly rare in adulthood. The fetus is sobbing a lot from the eighth week. Babies born prematurely also often have hiccups. The frequency of hiccups in fetuses and premature babies has led some researchers to speculate that this phenomenon could represent a kind of spontaneous muscle preparation intended to strengthen the breathing muscles. A pre-ordered and well-aimed gymnastics. But this hypothesis is however rejected by other scholars. Another hypothesis is also interesting, according to which hiccups could be a system to favor the advancement of the food bolus in the esophagus that forms after chewing and swallowing. Critics of this hypothesis, however, point out that if this were the case, the hiccups of newborn babies, who consume only liquid food, would be useless and unjustified. The most recent hypothesis is that hiccups serve to remove the presence of air in the stomach. The presence of this “reflex” would help young mammals who are dependent on milk consumption. The continuous nature of sucking in fact involves its coordination with breathing and the result may be that of ingesting air. A reflex that helps remove swallowed air results in an increase in the stomach’s capacity for milk. And this would also explain why hiccups are more frequent in childhood ».
