Tasnim Ali, the 22-year-old who explains Islam on TikTok

by admin

She wouldn’t want it for Christmas, because she obviously doesn’t celebrate Christmas, but if she had to choose a tech gift, then she’d choose a MacBook, “although I don’t know if I really want it, and if I’d really use it for what it can do, or if it’s just a whim “. She is Tasnim Ali, 22, was born in Arezzo from a family of Egyptian origin and lives in Rome. And she has the tastes, desires and expectations of pretty much all girls of her age. Unlike more or less all her peers, Tasnim has 560,000 followers on TikTok and is what once called herself an influencer and is now called a creator. Yet: unlike pretty much all creators on TikTok, Tasnim has chosen a very challenging topic for his videos. He has chosen to talk about religion and Islam, which is his religion.

We met her in Milan on the occasion of the event organized by TikTok to take stock of 2021 and he told us that his career on the social network of the moment began like that of many others, and it started a bit by chance: “I posted the first clips between March and April 2020, during the first lockdown. They were ironic, I showed my life and my sisters’ – he recalled with us – Then I published a joke about the differences between wearing the veil and not wearing the veil on a day of strong wind. And the questions began ”. His profile was born like this, from people’s curiosity: “I chose to address these topics (veil, Islam and religion, ed) not because I thought they would work, but because I felt there was a lot of interest and that I could answer and explain”.

Challenge and online hoaxes, TikTok’s countermeasures to defend teenagers

Talk about Islam on social media
But what is it like to deal with these issues in a country like Italy, which the daily reports describe as closed, not very respectful of diversity and where integration still seems difficult? “This is my country, and I don’t think my country is racist – Tasnim told us – What is certain is that if there are people, especially some politicians, who blow the fire of hatred and controversy, everything becomes more complicated ”. Compared to the rest of Europe, however, there are differences, and they are not pleasant: “Thanks to my father I traveled a lot and I noticed that nowhere, in Germany, France, Holland, England, there is this focus on what is different. In those countries there are women with veils who work everywhere, there are Muslims, there are people dressed in every way, and nobody pays any attention to these things. Maybe we are still a little provincial ”.

Perhaps we are also a bit ignorant and should we know better what we would like to criticize? “Yes – conceded Tasnim – which is why I always recommend traveling, traveling as much and as much as possible, because it opens the mind. And because ignorance is really the biggest obstacle I encountered on TikTok ”. No hater, a few offensive comments, but many from those who do not understand his world and its principles: “I noticed that people are willing to listen, deepen and even change their minds, if things are explained to them”. All people? “No, not all of them, but especially those of my generation, with whom I find it easier to relate and that in my opinion they are more open – Tasnim explained to us – It is very rare that an under 30 makes free criticism about my way of dressing or acting, while it is much more frequent with the over 40s and over 50s “.

The relationship with the family (and with technology)
She, who despite her young age is already married (happily, judging from what she shows on TikTok), has very clear ideas even on the most delicate issues that are often associated with Islam, such as the oppression of women and terrorism : “Many see the veil as one compulsion, and it is also to explain that this is not how I decided to talk about these topics on the profile and to show that my life and that of my friends are not so different from those of our peers “. And the terrorism? “The people who associate these facts with Islam are wrong – he told us bluntly – just as people who kill in the name of religion are wrong, with their own wrong interpretation of religion. Whatever religion it is “.

In what at the moment is definitely his career and his main commitment, because “I put university on hiatus (he attends political science, ed) and my dad’s travel agency, where I worked, is closed”, Tasnim has the total support of the family: “Mother she’s a big fan, she reads all the comments and sometimes she suggests me how to answer – she told us – Mine dad he is very proud of me, he says that I am doing well and that this is the right way to talk about these topics “. And the husband, a young Egyptian from Rome? “He is happy, so much that he would like to be my manager – he told us smiling – Only that I already have a manager”.

Like other creators of his age, Tasnim also decides more or less independently what to publish, when and how, with few exceptions: “The profile is managed by me, I’m free to choose the topics and I’m the one who responds to all comments. Or at least all the comments I can answer. Then there are the videos I have to do for work, with the agency (which is called Wannabe and has offices in Milan and Naples, ed) that finds me collaborations and contracts with companies “.

Again like many other creators who debuted in spring 2020, Tasnim also started with what he had, that is, using the front camera of the phone: “It was an iPhone 11, now I’ve moved on to 12 and I feel good like this – he told us – I like technology and smartphones interest me, but since I do what I do, the quality of the camera is decisive for me. And on this, iPhone seems unbeatable to me ”. But if it could change, it would totally change: “Android is 100 times better in daily use, and I would like a Samsung ”, he confessed with a smile. Which, however, would complicate her life a bit with the MacBook mentioned at the beginning, if you ever decide to buy it: to help you decide, here’s our proof.
