ROME. It is on the alert for Bizarro, a new banking malware that comes from Brazil and has hit 70 banks in various European and South American countries, including Italy. To find out the Kaspersky researchers who explain how the cybercriminals authors of this family of viruses are adopting different methods to prevent their analysis and detection. Bizarro is downloaded by opening a link in spam emails. Once launched, it automatically downloads a zip folder from a compromised site to implement its malicious functionality. According to the researchers, the banking virus contains more than 100 commands, most of which are used to show fake pop-up messages to users. Some of these are structured in such a way that they look the same as notifications sent by online banking systems.

«Today we are witnessing a revolutionary trend in the distribution of banking Trojans: local actors actively attack users not only in their geographic area but also throughout the rest of the world. By implementing new techniques, Brazilian malware families have begun to hit other continents and Bizarro, which targets European users, is a prime example – explains Fabio Assolini, Kaspersky security expert – This is the clear signal of today more than ever it is necessary to focus one’s efforts at the local level both on the analysis of criminals and on threat intelligence. Those that arise as localized threats could soon become problems of global interest ». To defend against these growing threats, experts recommend banking companies to constantly update their security teams, implement anti-fraud solutions, and educate their customers about the tricks that could be used by attackers, regularly sending advice on how to identify fraud and how to act in these situations.
