Eike Schmidt, born in 1968, is the Director of the Uffizi Galleries in Florence. Schmidt, with a BA in Arts and a Ph.D. in Art History, during his career was Research Curator of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, and Curator of the Department of Sculpture and Decorative Arts of the J. Paul Getty Museum of Los Angeles. Schmidt has published 9 books, 43 essays, 5 reviews and 112 factsheets in seven languages, with particular emphasis on the history of sculpture, and on the history of Medici collecting. Seven times winner, with works of art purchased for the J. Paul Getty Museum and the Minneapolis Institue of Arts, of the “Museum Acquisitions of the Year” of the magazine “Apollo”, London.
