Telegram, the paid version arrives. And CEO Durov thinks of the IPO

Telegram will shortly launch a subscription plan for a “Premium” version of the application. This was announced by Pavel Durov, the CEO and founder of the platform, who explained the reasons that led him to this decision in a post on the official blog.
Durov explained that the free version – that is the current one – will not undergo changes with respect to the functioning we already know. But with Telegram “Premium”, which will arrive later this month, there will be some tweaks (and improvements) for users.

“After thinking about it for a long time, we realized that the only way to offer something more to our most loyal users, without penalizing standard users, is to adjust their limits upwards with a paid option”. Durov wrote in his post, who then added: «This is why this month we will introduce Telegram Premium, a subscription plan that will allow everyone to acquire additional features, speed and resources. Furthermore, the subscription will allow the most loyal users to support Telegram and enter the club of those who will receive the platform updates first ».

Here are the news. The price is expected to be $ 4.99 per month

The most significant changes between the two versions should concern some details such as the ability to upload larger files to chat, access to a gallery of exclusive stickers, access to public groups without advertisements, and finally the ability to write a longer biography. All at a price that, according to rumors, could be $ 4.99 a month.

It should be remembered that Telegram is currently not listed on the stock exchange, despite the fact that in recent months – even and especially after the outbreak of the war in Ukraine – it has gained prestige and subscriptions. The app is the real competitor of WhatsApp, and today it has 500 million monthly active users and is consistently among the 10 most downloaded applications in the world. Durov said the decision to offer a paid subscription was made to ensure Telegram remains funded primarily by its users and not by advertisers.

But Premium’s move could be the forerunner that the CEO has been waiting for for a long-overdue IPO. The idea is that of a direct listing on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, with a valuation of 50 billion dollars.
