An article published in the international journal Telemedicine and e-Health (https://doi.org/10.1089/tmj.2020.0561) analyzes the televisions in a center of the New York University; all patients undergoing telemedicine visits between March and June 2020 were included. All departments were included. Demographics, primary language and type of visit were collected. The primary postcode was used as substitute for socio-economic status through the use of the median household income of the postal code.
Gender gap
They have been analyzed 362,413 visits in telemedicine. 59.6% of the patients were identified as white, 11.4% black and 5.7% Asian. There was a large gender gap in the use of telemedicine services in general, where women (60.2%) were more likely than men (39.8%) to use virtual visits. Furthermore, although over a third of patients in the metropolitan area have a average family income of less than $ 50,000, these represent only 13.6% of the total cohort. This study highlights both the ability of telemedicine to provide assistance in a large urban academic medical center during a pandemic, and potential gaps in assistance with telemedicine. The disparities highlighted underline the importance of involvement of elderly, non-white male patients with lower socioeconomic status.
