Texting on your cell phone while walking is dangerous, even Google says so

by admin

Google has developed a new function in the Digital Wellbeing app (in Italian Benessere Digitale) to alert Android users who are walking distractedly in the street with their mobile phone in hand. Those who have a Pixel smartphone will be able to use it first. Thanks to a recent update, the function called Heads Up is already available on Big G’s mobile devices as clearly shown by the images disseminated on various sites and the screenshots shared on social networks. Its adoption was expected months ago, tested on a beta version of the Digital Wellbeing app. Google, moreover, often uses its Pixel models to experiment with the innovations that later become features to be introduced in all other Android phones.

Heads Up can be selected and configured from the phone settings by granting the app the necessary permissions to allow the system to check and detect when a person is on the move. Once the function is activated, which can be disabled if necessary, the user will receive various notifications on the device screen inviting him to pay attention and to be vigilant about how he proceeds on the road.

People who use smartphones while walking to send messages or surf the Internet are at great risk. Accidents involving pedestrians are becoming more and more frequent. Digital distraction can be fatal. In the United States, calls for greater attention and safety, supported by more in-depth research, have intensified due to a significant increase in pedestrian injuries and deaths due to the misuse of cell phones while walking or crossing the street. Heads Up is a tool to try to reduce these harmful effects and call users to greater vigilance over their behavior.
