Don’t your kids like broccoli? Your oral microbiome is to blame. There is a scientific reason why getting them to eat them is virtually impossible, and it is related to genetics. Researchers from Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization searched for the source of disgust for crucifers – the leafy green vegetable family to which cabbage, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, rocket and radish also belong – and discovered that the cause lies in the bacteria in the mouth which, combined with the enzymes of the vegetables, produce an unpleasant and sulphurous smell.
