The appeal of the Italian Tesla owners: instead of the former Ilva a Gigafactory for electric cars

by admin

In place of the former Ilva a Tesla Gigafactory: the proposal comes from Tesla Owners Italia, the most active group of enthusiasts among the owners of Elon Musk’s cars. According to the supporters of the project, it would thus be possible to solve many problems that afflict the Taranto area and the steel mill area: pollution, impoverishment of territorial resources, repercussions on the tourism industry, development of an area that has excellent land and sea connections. . The steel plant, which now belongs to ArcelorMittal and in whose capital Invitalia is about to enter, has always been at the center of controversy due to its environmental impact. The production cycle of this type of steel, not certified as’ ‘green’ ‘and therefore produced with climate-changing energy sources, is in any case destined to end now that many industries that bought it (for example Volvo) have decided to supply themselves only with steel’ ‘green’, with minimal environmental impact, all in view of the necessary emissions reductions that should lead to ” carbon neutrality ” by 2050, as decided by the European Community, which in the future will finance only eco-compatible projects.

The sense of the Tesla Owners Italia initiative is consistent with these objectives and, moreover, it would contribute to the reclamation and conversion of the entire area towards the development of work and production more integrated with the natural resources of the place. The Club will also bring the proposal to Parliament and to the judgment of the local authorities, the workers of the former Ilva and the citizens of Taranto with an awareness campaign.

Currently, Tesla’s largest Gigafactory is in Nevada: it covers almost 180,000 square meters for a total of over 460,000 square meters of operational space considering the different floors. Inaugurated in 2014, it is still under construction but already operational and uses only renewable energy.

Elon Musk, however, is planning many investments outside the US, in China and in the future also in India. In Europe it has already almost completed a car factory near Berlin, which will be completed very soon. The position of Taranto would be strategic for a Gigafactory of batteries, with large openings for the transport of goods to the Middle and Far East, also giving work and quality to the Port of Taranto, also destined to decline if not converted very soon towards a strategy of minimal environmental impact. It is possible that Tesla sees a good opportunity in Taranto, also considering an affinity with another business of the highest level: the nearby military airport of Grottaglie could be a perfect base for the activities of Space X, the space program of Musk that will see in three years the return of man (and woman) to the moon.
