The sports center of the parish of Magrignano is underway: it is the only aggregation center of the neighborhood

There could not have been a better curtain to inaugurate the parish sports center next to the church which is a stone’s throw from the Sughere prison: something more than the “priest’s oratory”. Also because in the whole new district – the last born in our city – there is not the slightest social infrastructure: only houses, houses, houses. And who knows if it is really only the fault of the problems of Edilporto or if the urban planning was so wrong from the beginning.
The fact is that the parish puts a patch on this lack and does so with a sports center whose construction was financed by donations from a series of benefactors – especially port entrepreneurs but not only – present in large representation yesterday in front of the ribbon cutting. by the mayor Luca Salvetti obviously together with the bishop and the parish priest. The mayor, who made a commitment in this regard, was asked to put his hand to an indispensable project so that the sports center next to the church of Santa Teresa di Calcutta is truly at the service of the neighborhood: there is a need for a bridge that allows to go to the other side of the Cigna stream, since the entire district is beyond the stream while the church and sports center are on this side.
It wasn’t just the authorities who inaugurated the center. There was also the emblem of sport: a representation of Pro Livorno Sorgenti on the football side and two main basketball teams of the city, Pielle and Libertas, who overcame the sporting rivalry to present themselves together. The bishop aims to involve the basketball clubs in the project with the use of a new gym. Among the hypotheses: in the Magrignano area? perhaps next to the Park of the Mill for the Down Boys? or by rearranging the one already existing inside the Salesians in viale Risorgimento?
The “bishop’s gymnasium”, as they already call it, has a mission: to let children play. And here the old suggestion of the prelate returns to the field: sport not made for champions but for schiappe. But to attract a few teenagers, there is nothing better than focusing on the champions of our home: this is where the idea of an alliance with basketball teams was born to “infect” the passion for sport.
Yesterday the ribbon cutting with the authorities, but – warns the parish priest – «we will do the inauguration with the people on Sunday 7: first mass, then we move on to present the new campino, then a lunch all together as we do every month to cement the sense of being a community, in the afternoon then the basketball players will come to dribble with our boys. It is an educational alliance, to be extended also to the disabled ».
So far Don Mancusi smiles, then no: «Here there is no sewer, lighting, road. And the bridge is missing. We did the sports center because the boys played in the middle of the roundabouts ».
The answer comes from Mayor Salvetti closely. Starting with the urbanizations: sewers and street lamps are on the list among the works planned for next year. And the bridge? “I sent the municipal technicians to look for a solution, I was told that it cannot be the pedestrian walkway because that stream needs to maintain a certain width against the risk of flooding and therefore we should create a staircase on both sides and create the bridge at a greater height, but with significant costs. Add to this the fact that the construction of a road that passes further north is planned to connect Borgo di Magrignano to via della Padula ».
