New Headquarters for Bambino Gesù Hospital to be Built at Former Forlanini Hospital Premises

In a significant agreement reached yesterday, the Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, and the Undersecretary of the Presidency of the Alfredo Mantovano Council have formalized the decision to establish the new headquarters of the Bambino Gesù hospital at the premises of the former Carlo Forlanini hospital. The former hospital has been closed and abandoned since 2015, and the new agreement marks an important step towards its revival.

The agreement recognizes the Bambino Gesù hospital’s “level of absolute excellence in the field of pediatric healthcare and biomedical research at the national and international level,” and states that the current structures at their historic headquarters of Sant’Onofrio do not allow for further expansion or improvement of healthcare offers and research activities. Thus, the former Forlanini hospital has been identified as one of the most suitable places for the construction of the new headquarters.

The agreement outlines the main steps of the operation, including the acquisition of the area and property by the Holy See, the concession of the surface right by Inail, the construction of the new hospital, and the rental of the new complex.

The decision has been welcomed by several officials. Mayor Roberto Gualtieri expressed his support, stating that using the former Forlanini hospital area for the new headquarters of Bambino Gesù represents a great opportunity to strengthen a center of healthcare excellence and regenerate an important piece of the city. Additionally, the president of the Lazio Region, Francesco Rocca, expressed satisfaction with the declaration, stating that it is a step towards the return of Forlanini to its vocation as a guardian in defense of the health of the most vulnerable.
