It has recently cooperated with the first generation of the “Final Fantasy” series. On the day of the 34th anniversary of the publication, an interview with the core production team sharing how the game brought “Final Fantasy” back to the source was published for players’ reference.

As the original “Final Fantasy” celebrated its anniversary, the developers generously shared the connection between this classic RPG and the upcoming new work of Team NINJA.

SQUARE ENIX web content editor

Happy anniversary of the original “Final Fantasy”! The first work of this enduring series was asked in the market on December 18, 1987. With hindsight, it seemed that it was named after “Final” as the base work. This first adventure game shocked the industry at that time-its innovative combat system, vast world and incredible music still give developers a lot of inspiration to this day.

It’s not an exaggeration, this work really opens a new game and rewrote the rules of the game.

Today, 34 years later, its spirit will continue to be passed on in “The Origins of Final Fantasy”. This cruel new action RPG is created by the team NINJA battle designer who created the games “Nioh” and “Ninja Gaiden” under Koei Tecmo. It is directly related to “Final Fantasy”. Its story, character and location And so on, people naturally think of the original work.

To help you understand what we mean, here is the main developer of SQUARE ENIX and Team NINJA to explain some of the connections and the secrets behind them…

Garland

Let me reveal it now: Our protagonist Jack is destined to change his face to become the villain of “Garland”.

In the original “Final Fantasy”, Garland is a powerful dark knight who threatens to plunge the land of Cornelia into chaos and is a major opponent of the protagonist. He is a well-loved (and representative) villain, but apart from a few brief conversations, we know very little about him.

Many villains appeared in the early “Final Fantasy” works, but their background stories did not get much description.

I believe that a good opponent should have clear reasons to explain how he went astray in the first place, so I think it would be very intriguing to dig deeper into Garland.

In “Final Fantasy I”, he appeared as the Dark Knight from the beginning of the game, but the story never carefully explained why he took that path. We think we can expand the legendary story of the original by portraying Garland as one of the possibilities of becoming a dark knight in the “Final Fantasy Origin of the Alien in Paradise”.

To be honest, to specialize in a villain that is not only in a single game, but in the entire “Final Fantasy” series, means that you have to bear a lot of additional responsibilities! Fortunately, I have excellent employees like Tetsuya Nomura, screenwriter Kazunari Nojima and Team NINJA who helped me in the development, so I think this will be a game that we are quite confident to launch.

– Fujiwara Hitoshi (producer of SQUARE ENIX)

Although Team NINJA has previously dealt with Garland’s action gameplay in “Dissidia Final Fantasy NT”, it feels that this game is different from the past. We bear greater responsibility, because this time with Garland as the protagonist, and to explore his true nature in the story more deeply.

– Fumiko Yasuda (Producer of Team NINJA under Koei Tecumo Games)

Since Jack’s gradual incarnation of Garland’s mental journey is the foundation of this story, we decided to use his devastating impulse-which has not been seen in the other protagonists of “Final Fantasy”-as the core concept and take it Transform into various action elements.

The first concept we laid out was “soul burst.” Originally, we considered using a more bloody picture to present, but finally decided to adopt a clear visual performance to integrate the FF style aesthetics into the shocking picture.

In addition, Garland in the “Dissidia” series has the ability of “Chaos Soul”, making him more and more courageous.

– Kumabe Sermon (Game Director of Koei Tecmo)

Cross the North Bridge

In the early days of the original “Final Fantasy”, the Warrior of Light crossed the North Bridge of Coneglia. It was a cutscene that fans remembered for a while. It marked the first step towards adventure… and in many ways marked the beginning of the entire series.

“Strangers in Paradise” will reproduce this classic opening scene-just as Jack and his companions cross the North Bridge to embark on their epic adventure.

When I heard the theme of “Final Fantasy”, it made me feel excited, and I felt that something great was about to unfold-the same feeling also emerged when I heard the theme song during the Olympic Games earlier this year! I hope to pass this same feeling to the players of “The Origins of Final Fantasy”.

-Daisuke Inoue (Director of SQUARE ENIX)

The original North Bridge scene left a deep impression. So far, we have kept a close synchronization with SQUARE ENIX for the reproduced creative process-from storyboard to sharing the reference of the ongoing stage, as well as lighting and final vision. Present.

The modeling of the North Bridge is quite challenging because it is not fully depicted in the original work. The overall scene composition of the final editing also took a lot of time to complete.

Since no one has built a model of the bridge before, the SQUARE ENIX team provided us with a rough idea of what the castle and Coneglia should look like in this work. We converted it into a model design sketch, and then proceeded with the bridge design.

In order to make the composition closer to the original 2D version, we actually put some models in a non-real 3D logic. However, considering that the camera will move in the final version, we did make some creative changes at will so that the North Bridge will not run the clock even in 3D action.

I hope we succeeded in making this work look like a modern version of “Final Fantasy I”!

– Usuda Koya (Game Director of Koei Tecmo)

The world of “The Origin of Final Fantasy” is based on science fiction. The premise of our creation is that things that seem impossible at first glance are actually possible under special circumstances, even in the real world.

The North Bridge and Cornelia Castle can be regarded as the core of the original work, so we are committed to creating an evolutionary blend, adding some modern details to its dreamy silhouette.

– Nobuhiro Goto (Art Director of SQUARE ENIX)

Praboka and the Pirates

After crossing the North Bridge, the group of warriors of light came to the town of Praboka. In the original “Final Fantasy”, this town has a little piracy crisis. There are more pirates in the city than sailors leaving the port normally. They are headed by Captain Bikai, and it is up to our hero to let him know what’s wrong with his behavior.

In “Final Fantasy I” against Bikai and his pirates.

  • image

Every time I play “Final Fantasy I”, I have the urge to go to Praboka immediately after crossing the North Bridge.

Speaking of the beginning of the story of “Final Fantasy Origins in Paradise”, I deliberately tried to follow the movement of the original work and decided to incorporate the pirate theme of this region. For example, when we were thinking about how to move the characters from Coneglia to the next major location, we decided to use the same pirate ship as the original.

-Daisuke Inoue (Director of SQUARE ENIX)

Royal family

Captain Bikai is not the only “Final Fantasy I” character to appear in the new work. King Cornelia and Princess Sara also return together, and there will be a more delicate and rich performance than in the original work.

Not only them, but there are also new members of the royal family including Queen Zhen and Princess Mia, who are ready to meet with fans.

  • image

As you might expect, the design of the royal family is not easy, because we have to create 3D versions of these characters from scratch. After collecting the available information, we can inject our own legend of “Final Fantasy Origins of the Aliens in Paradise”, but it is definitely a big challenge to enrich the overall concept.

Since we are committed to creating a mature “Final Fantasy” game, we don’t think we can be completely unrealistic and unrealistic. In addition, I personally want to make sure that there are reasonable explanations and explanations for each element of these roles. Even as a rumor, we must design the characters in a way that does not appear weird or unbelievable.

For example, in “The Origin of Final Fantasy”, Sarah is more like a mother, while Mia is more like a father. In addition, we also face another challenge, which is how much fantasy can be downplayed? Since we imagine that this story takes place in the real world of the future not far from the present, we try to make the proportions of the character’s head and body close to that of modern people, and make other elements such as skin texture and wrinkles appear very delicate to appear More realistic.

In addition to photorealistic details, we also wanted to create a sense of “super technology” and a dark Gothic atmosphere, so we drew inspiration from design styles such as “Gothic Lolita” and punk. In addition, since white is the base color of the Coneglia Castle, we told the designer Roberto Ferrari that we hope to incorporate it into the royal clothing.

– Nobuhiro Goto (Art Director of SQUARE ENIX)

Tiamat-Chaos of Wind

The design of the four monsters is particularly important to the “Final Fantasy Origin of the Alien in Paradise”, so we invited Takayuki Taketani to be responsible for their creation. He is quite famous in biological design, and even Tetsu Nomura highly recommends it!

Of course, if we simply transferred the four monsters of the original work in this way, they would lack particularity. So while preserving some important elements of Tiamat (such as the number of heads), we also incorporated the unique elements of “Final Fantasy ORIGIN” into the design-for example, making monster-like monsters have a certain degree of Humanoid!

I can’t reveal any more about the man trapped in Tiamat’s chest (spoiler)! However, the use of this way of embedding in the body is the result of our consideration of how to perform with the most realistic effect. Mr. Taketani also works as a sculptor, and his designs are very precise-there is no problem in converting them into computer-generated graphics.

– Nobuhiro Goto (Art Director of SQUARE ENIX)

However, since Tiamat in the original game is famous for its various elemental attacks, we merged them into a breath attack. Then a battle is derived from this concept, allowing players to attack its head and chop them off one by one to defeat Tiamat!

– Kumabe Sermon (Game Director of Koei Tecmo)

The love of a lifetime

  • image

We will celebrate next year’s 35th anniversary with this work (and series of works), and now it’s time for the developers to say a few words to everyone:

The first series I have ever played was “Final Fantasy IV”-when “Final Fantasy I” came out, I didn’t keep up. Later, I played its PlayStation version, and I still remember that I was deeply moved, not only because of its classic theme, but also the well-known RPG elements of “Final Fantasy” that had already laid a solid foundation in the first generation.

– Fumiko Yasuda (Producer of Team NINJA)

What does “Final Fantasy I” mean to me? It is both the origin and the goal.
