New Research Shows Heated Tobacco Products Could Harm Children’s Cardiovascular Health

A new study conducted by Sapienza University of Rome, IRCCS Neuromed of Pozzilli, and Mediterranea Cardiocentro of Naples has found that heated tobacco products, often touted as a less harmful alternative to traditional cigarettes, could have negative effects on the cardiovascular system of children and adolescents exposed to secondhand smoke. The research, which has been published in the scientific journal Environmental Pollution, highlights the potential dangers of secondhand smoke from heated tobacco products.

The study examined three groups of children and adolescents aged between 2 and 18, divided based on their exposure to smoking in the family: no type of smoking, exposed to traditional smoking, and exposed to heated tobacco smoke. The results showed that children and adolescents exposed to heated tobacco smoke had higher oxidative stress, greater platelet activation, and an alteration of endothelial function, which could all lead to a greater cardiovascular risk.

One of the authors of the study, Lorenzo Loffredo, emphasized that while heated tobacco products may be less harmful than traditional cigarettes, they are not harmless. He added that the consequences and damage on the cardiovascular system of children and adolescents exposed to secondhand smoke from heated tobacco products are comparable to those exposed to traditional cigarette smoke.

Heated tobacco products, which heat tobacco without burning it, have gained popularity since their introduction to the international market in 2014. However, the study highlights that the substances present in the tobacco contained in these products, such as nicotine, tin, black carbon, and formaldehyde, pose potential risks to health, including cardiovascular and oncological risks.

The authors of the study stressed the importance of encouraging people to quit smoking altogether, regardless of the type of cigarette. They also emphasized the need for zero tolerance towards passive smoking of any type. As the number of consumers of heated tobacco products continues to grow, it is crucial for the public to be aware of the potential health risks associated with these products, particularly for children and adolescents exposed to secondhand smoke.
