Understand from eyes if we are at risk of heart attack: this is what has been revealed by an innovative research conducted by a team of scholars in England. The study will be presented at the annual conference of the ESHG – European Society of Human Genetics and argues that by intertwining the results of a non-invasive eye examination with other data, it could be established whether the subject is at risk of heart attack or not.

The analysis of the fractal dimension of the retina it could be revealing to understand the predisposition or not to a heart attack. According to what emerged from the study, the changes in the vascularization of the retina would be able to give information about our health. In particular, as explained by Ana Villaplana-Velascoresearcher of Usher and Roslin Institutes of the University of Edinburgh, a certain datum of the fractal dimension of the retina combined with some branching patterns of the blood vessels, it could be linked to the risk of heart attack.
A research that must be further investigated, with studies that carefully evaluate the results also based on the sex of the patients, to understand if it can influence the classification of risk. Already a research conducted a few years ago by University of Leeds and from British Heart Foundationhad highlighted how there was diversity in the therapeutic approach to heart attack depending on the patient’s sex.

Professor Sir Nilesh Samani (of the British Heart Foundation) calls for caution and stresses that further information is needed to understand whether a specific eye examination can actually be a valid aid in the prevention of heart attack.
