A new study shows that geological activities seem to follow a cycle of 27.5 million years, providing “pulsations” to the earth.

The lead author of the research report, New York University geologist and professor of biology, Michael Rampino, said: “Many geologists believe that geological events are random in time. But our research provides statistics. The study data proves that there is a total cycle, indicating that these geological events are related and not random.”

In the past 50 years, experts have proposed that the cycle of major geological events (including volcanic activity and the mass extinction of terrestrial marine life, etc.) is about 36 million years from 26 million years. ekaprdweb01.eurekalert.org quoted an article in “Geoscience Frontiers” and reported that earlier, due to the limitations of geological event dating technology, experts faced many difficulties in researching the correlation of major geological events and were unable to carry out quantitative research. But later, the radioisotope dating method was significantly improved, and the geological chronology also changed, allowing experts to obtain new data on the time of past geological events. Using the latest dating data, Lampino and his colleagues developed an updated record of major geological events in the past 260 million years and performed a new analysis.

They analyzed the timing of 89 major geological events that have occurred over the past 260 million years, including the extinction of marine and terrestrial organisms, large-scale volcanic eruptions, ocean deoxygenation, sea level fluctuations, and changes or reorganizations of the earth’s tectonic plates.

It was found that in 260 million years, these global geological events were usually concentrated at 10 different time points, with a gap of about 27.5 million years between high and low peaks. The last major gathering of geological events was about 7 million years ago. From this, it can be inferred that the next geological “pulsation” will occur more than 20 million years later.

Experts believe that these pulsations may be the result of the periodicity of underground activities (geophysical processes related to plate activity and climate change), but they may also be the result of similar periodicity shown by the Earth in space orbit.

Lampino said: “Regardless of the causes of these periodic events, our findings have proven that geological events are largely periodic, linked, and cyclically catastrophic. This is inconsistent with the views of many geologists. The difference.”
