The Venetians call them “wake damage”: they are the erosion of buildings in Venice caused by thousands of motorboats that go around the lagoon. Very serious damage because – according to a study by the municipality – it has already caused problems for 60% of the buildings in the city.
Candela, the flying electric boat
Ma la C7, an electric boat designed by the Swedish company Candle that “flies” over the water could be the solution: it produces no emissions (while most of the motorboat engines that circulate in Venice are not even catalyzed) and generates very few waves. These Swedish boats are in fact hydrofoils, with small computer-controlled underwater wings. Wings that manage to raise the hull above the water and reduce friction by 80% compared to conventional taxi boats.
An example for all: using very little energy and traveling silently, Candela’s C-7 pleasure boat produces a wake less than 5 cm high, roughly the size of the wake generated by a gondola.
And that’s not the only advantage: the C-7 it can sail at high speeds (20 knots) for over 2 hours and offers a much higher comfort than traditional boats. The secret is the computer-controlled submarine aileron: it moves 100 times per second to balance the boat, giving an artificially stable ride even in strong winds and bigger waves.
