The first anti-pandemic agency in Italy is born in Lombardy – Medicine

(ANSA) – MILAN, 06 JUN – Research in the field of prevention and monitoring to be prepared for future and possible pandemics. With these objectives, the first Italian agency for the prevention and control of infectious diseases was born in Lombardy.

A new structure that will be based at the Sacco hospital in Milan and for which the Region has already allocated 85 million euros. The agency will collaborate at European level with the new Hera project (Authority for the preparation and response to health emergencies), contributing to the development of community policies for the response to health emergencies.

Among the main tasks of the agency will be the research of new therapeutic strategies and vaccines, the good use of antibiotic drugs and the fight against antibiotic resistance.

The structure, divided into seven sectors, will carry out research in the virological, immunological and clinical fields, in an attempt to develop innovative tools and develop mathematical models for the control and management of the progress of infectious diseases.

The agency will be composed of the Board of Directors (5 members of which 3 designated by the Region, one by the Ministry of Health and one by the Ministry of the University); by the general manager; by the scientific director and the Board of Statutory Auditors. “It is a structure that reinforces the great prevalence that Lombardy has in the life sciences and is a further stimulus for researchers, virologists and immunologists”, commented the Lombard president Attilio Fontana during the presentation of the agency at Palazzo Lombardia. “Its strategic importance has emerged even more after the pandemic – he added – and therefore I am even happier that it has already had the ‘go-ahead’ of the government as a flagship project”.

As explained by the Lombard vice president, Letizia Moratti, the agency “will be operational from October 1st and will initially be able to count on a staff of 20 people”. A project “that arises from analyzing and listening to the pandemic”, with Lombardy “confirming itself as the leader in Italy in Life Sciences: a record that, in this way, will be further strengthened”.
