The five TV series not to be missed in August: holidays, resorts and (perhaps) relaxation

by admin

Resort, holidays and relaxation. But it is never what we expect. “The White Lotus” to smile and “Nine perfect strangers” to reflect. Nothing goes the way it should. A perfect metaphor for this second summer with Covid-19. Also noteworthy is What If, the Marvel series that is a bit like the sliding doors of superhero movies. Good vision.

Someone will remember the cult movies by director Billy Corben. Fifteen years later comes this miniseries about the stories of two friends who became protagonists of one of the largest drug trafficking businesses in the United States. It’s a true story and it happened in Florida. (Netflix)

Hawaiian resort, super luxury, super efficient, one where the customer is always right and must always be spoiled. A paradise of relaxation which, however, will not turn out to be such. The step is that of social satire. It promises to be fun but not too much. (Sky Atlantic is streaming on NOW).

The series is based on the novel of the same name by Liane Moriarty. Behind is the team of the masterpiece Little Big Lies. Starring Nicole Kidman and Melissa McCarthy. Here too we are in a resort. Nine stressed out characters who live in the city and try to follow a path to have a better lifestyle. These nine strangers have no idea what awaits them. Let’s say they will have a different group therapy than usual. This TV series winks at Fantasy Island (1978) but with an even more psychoanalytic approach (Amazon Prime).

Sandra Oh is one of the most loved faces of “Grey’s Anatomy”. We find her in the shoes of the new director of the English department of the prestigious Pembroke University. She will not have an easy time because she is the first woman to fill this role. Racial prejudice and sentimental mess and envy: the series seems to be well written. Behind is Amanda Peet with David Benioff, the latter also involved in the project as showrunner with DB Weiss. (Netflix)
