The heart, an AU to talk about it: movement, diet and prevention

by admin

World Heart Day was created to announce to everyone, to people around the world that heart disease, heart attack and stroke are the leading cause of death in the world.
Together with organizations such as the WHO and organizations such as schools, the World Heart Federation is spreading the news that at least 80% of premature deaths from heart disease and stroke could be avoided if the main risk factors – which are tobacco, unhealthy diet and physical inactivity – were effectively and daily monitored.

The theme of 2021

This year the theme of the “World Heart Day” “Use the heart to connect” after a year and a half of pandemic, during which and through COVID, it was requested to keep distance.

In this historical moment, therefore, the World Heart Day 2021, is therefore and strongly proposed as an event to connect people.

Celebrate “My heart, your heart”

Celebrate “My heart, your heart”, as a teacher, as a pupil, as a parent and, more generally, as a school this 29 September 2021, like every other 29 September, this “World Heart Day” by taking responsibility health of your heart and spreading the message to others.

World Heart Federation

Created by the World Heart Federation, the “World Heart Day” aims, primarily, to raise awareness of the irreplaceable importance of global heart health and to encourage people (our pupils, of any order and degree) to take serious remedies and, mainly, long-lasting to improve their cardiovascular health.

Heart disease and stroke are the leading cause of death worldwide. At least 80% of premature deaths from these diseases are avoidable if major risk factors were controlled.

Living more: from treating cardiovascular diseases to heart transplantation

What to talk about on this fantastic day?

Talking about transplants on this particular day helps students understand the functioning and anatomy of the heart and learn new medical techniques that help people live longer and healthier lives.

Examine and evaluate changes in diet and lifestyle

It is the day when it is necessary to examine and evaluate changes in diet and lifestyle from prehistoric times to modern times and how these differences have favored the onset (and better treatment) of heart disease.

It is also the day to teach the risk factors and symptoms of a heart attack and the physiological changes that occur once blockage of the arteries occurs.

Obesity

Finally, it is the day in which, in our schools, it is time to explore the health problems associated with being overweight, including the risks to the heart.

Students need to be helped to understand how hypertension is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke.

What happens on World Heart Day?

Governments and non-governmental organizations from all over the world, in addition to the millions of educational institutions on the planet, united in a single and strong momentum of life, colorful and fragrant, celebrate and promote “World Heart Day” with activities such as fun runs, conferences public, concerts and sporting events. The World Heart Federation organizes awareness events in more than 100 countries.

They include:

Health checks.

Sporting events, including walks, runs and fitness sessions.

Public conferences and scientific forums

Theatrical performances and concerts.

Exhibitions.

These activities are carried out, in the world, even in the most isolated territories of the earth, in collaboration with organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO), which is, in this specific case, the management and coordination authority of the Organization of United Nations for health in the world.

But, now, it is necessary to understand what to do in our schools; what we can do, each of us, concretely.

It is not a holiday but a day in which to celebrate and shout for life

World Heart Day is a global observance, but it is not a public holiday. But let’s not forget that it’s a day to party.

Information on World Heart Day

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death worldwide and is expected to remain so, according to the WHO. About 17.5 million people died from cardiovascular disease in 2020, accounting for 30% of all global deaths. Risk factors that can lead to heart disease and stroke include:

Increased blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose levels.

Smoking and alcohol.

Inadequate intake of meats, cheeses, oils and, also, fruit in particular.

Obesity, of course, as a consequence, particularly of the previous point.

The paths along which to lead our students

But which paths to take together with our students? To our colleagues. Let’s indicate them here, below:

Activity and Health

To sensitize pupils and teachers, parents and school staff, the whole world, on the importance of taking care of one’s heart through primary prevention, using improved lifestyles and uninterrupted physical activity, stop smoking by reducing the intake of alcoholic substances.

Prevention

Prevention is an important deterrent to avoid the onset of cardiovascular disease. For this reason for the Day of the Heart, it is necessary to strongly encourage and promote the culture of cardiological visits with the verification of cholesterol, weight and, mainly, the body mass index (BMI) starting from school children to the point of extending it to the rest of the Italian population and, in perspective, worldwide.

Awareness raising

Reactive each student, each of us, through the prevention of cardiovascular diseases and through a culture of early cardiac defibrillation with the semi-automatic external defibrillator.

Talk about it at school

But how to talk about it at school? Where to talk about it, basically. Italian, science, civics, English? Or more properly to make it an important life tool and long life perspective. A suggestion comes to us from the IC “A. Malerba ”of Catania, led with exceptional professional competence by Professor Agata Pappalardo, with a Learning Unit“ Movement to sentiment ”aimed at pupils of the lower secondary school. A UdA resulting from different synergies, such as those between professors Agatella Pennisi (Motor Sciences), Fabio Nastasi (Music), Delia Puglisi (Technology), Fiori Michela (biological sciences and coordinator), Angelo E. Intorre (Italian) and Olga Mammano (assistant consultant).

What should be done?

What do you ask to do? The UdA states that “pupils must monitor their heartbeat. He will first be asked to measure his resting heart rate (heart rate measurement before starting physical activity). After doing some gymnastic exercises, they will be asked to monitor their heart rate under exercise and to write down all the data in the notebook. (Exercise science) During exercise, the respiratory rate increases and the heart beats faster because it has to pump more blood to the muscles involved in the effort. When they are stressed, they need a greater amount of oxygen (present in the blood) to “burn” the substances that produce the energy necessary for movement. Therefore it is necessary that the pupil knows how to choose a diet suitable for the activity and expenditure of physical energy. (Technology) The fundamental and most ancient element of music is rhythm, deeply linked to nature and even to human physiology. Rhythm is movement, corporeality and therefore dance. Through movement, man communicates, expresses what he feels, what he hears (Music) The heart is an organ with specific functions (Biological Sciences) but it is also at the basis of the relationship life of each boy. The presence of the assistant-consultant (Olga Mammano) will allow children to learn how to measure their heartbeats correctly, as well as represent a moment of first aid knowledge, reminding each student that the first thing to do is to call the 118 without improvising. Even Italian literature has given voice to the sentiment, to the hidden dream of the enamored and restless heart of the stilnovist poet, who finds peace in the mystical contemplation of his beloved, rendered unreachable and angelic, an irreplaceable mediator between human frailty and divine omnipotence. (Italian). Finally, in the computer lab, all the data collected will be analyzed and represented using the Excel program ”.
