The importance of global health, from the European agency to the masters

by admin

GLOBAL HEALTH is boundless, physical or mental, it must be a state of ‘bio-psycho-social’ well-being and a full right for all. The Covid-19 pandemic has put us in front of the shortcomings we have in this field, catching us completely unprepared.

But things are changing. The European Union has created a new agency to deal with similar situations: the European Authority for the preparation and response to health emergencies (HERA), whose birth was announced as early as September 2020. The consultations have been closed for a few days. public in which ordinary citizens, patient organizations, consumers, healthcare professionals, businesses, researchers, universities and so on have been invited to give their opinion on the matter. The mandate will then be defined later in the year.

Also in the Lancet, in a letter signed by the members of EGHRIN (European Global Health Research Institutes Network), the importance of Hera and the need for it to embrace a global dimension of health threats are underlined, bearing in mind the three main components of preparation : risk assessment, management and communication, always in collaboration with the other agencies of the European Union.

EGHRIN is a European network of global health research institutes that includes the University of Milan, the University of Amsterdam (Amsterdam Institute for Global Health and Development) and ISGlobal of the University of Barcelona among its founding members. It comprises 23 leading research groups in Europe united to support research and innovation, facilitate collaboration between global partners and deepen knowledge of health systems around the world. The main objectives range from non-communicable and rare diseases to contagious ones, to healthy well-being throughout life, placing everything in a context that examines the environment and social determinants. Having a single voice is important to raise awareness of global health issues and have a stronger impact on the EU research agenda.

To this is added, a fundamental point, training. In the autumn, the 2nd level Master in Global Health of the University of Milan will start, which aims to investigate the great global health problems by placing them in a multidisciplinary context: understanding health problems without overshadowing the economic and social aspects. The master, coordinated by Mario Raviglione, professor at the University of Global Health, completely in English and online, includes frontal teaching but also seminars, exercises and case studies, and an internship period of 250 hours. The lectures will be held by experts and teachers from different faculties of the University of Milan, from other important Italian universities and institutions and from foreign academic institutions.

This is to create specialists who know how to have different approaches and propose innovative solutions in all sectors concerning health, from public to private, from non-governmental to international. In fact, creating synergies and cooperation means having a greater impact on the health challenges that exist and that will come.
