“The King’s Bounty 2” Review-Gamereactor-King’s Bounty II

by admin

Not many new games are as eagerly anticipated as the official sequel to “King’s Bounty.” Products such as the original game, derivative works from the 2000s and Heroes of Might and Magic have attracted my attention for hundreds of hours. Now, the sequel promises to bring the series into a new direction and dimension.

For those of you who have never played the game of “The King’s Gift”, I will give you a rough overview. The concept of the game combines role-playing and turn-based strategy. The player leads the selected hero through an ordinary fantasy world, and drags a large group of different soldiers and creatures in the battle, so whenever the battle breaks out, the hero will not step into the battlefield himself, but let the army do it for him Dirty work. You can buy more units from towns all over the world, including soldiers and creatures.

Although the previous game was a 2D bird’s-eye perspective (although the game engine was 3D at the time), “The King’s Gift 2” chose to use a third-person perspective. Fortunately, the battle is still a turn-based overlook, but the exploration is carried out in real time, including collecting treasures and missions. If you take a quick glance, you might also mistake “The King’s Gift 2” for a game in the “Savior” series.

The new perspective has its advantages and disadvantages. On the other hand, the town is now more lively, rather than a sluggish market that was just a soldier. However, this decision did make the pace of the game slower. There are a lot of dialogues and plot animations around, which slows down the game. In addition, the different treasures that can be found in the world are also a bit boring. Most of the things found in boxes and vats are useless trash, which is of no use other than to sell to merchants. Equipment, spells and money are particularly scarce.

The new perspective also brings other problems. Although the graphics in the previous games are still very beautiful today, the “Bonus of the King 2” always looks quite ugly here and there. The game engine is more like a game from the Xbox 360 era, rather than a modern exquisite RPG. It can also be heard that the production budget of this work is relatively prosperous, because the dubbing is really not very good. The most important thing is that although there are some button shortcuts that can make everything more streamlined, the interface is more clumsy than before. All of these take a while to get used to, but it’s worth a try.

Fortunately, despite the rough edges, the game content itself is interesting. As mentioned earlier, the battle is turn-based and is conducted in the same way as before. The battle does not appear randomly, but is placed on the map like the previous game. The fighting part itself is very good. All soldiers have their own special abilities. These abilities can be used once or twice in each battle, depending on the number of rounds the battle lasts. The hero’s spells and abilities can also be used once per round.

In most cases, the battle is the same as the previous game, which is a good thing. The strange thing is that the battle is much less than before, and it has become more difficult. Even in the early stages of the game, it is recommended to consider using the retreat option, because groups of monsters can instantly suppress an unprepared hero.

Fighting is also one of the toughest parts of the game: because you might end up in a dead end. If the battle fails and the hero is still alive, then a new squad must be called to fight. If you don’t have money and all available tasks are completed, there is basically no play and the game is over. Of course you can continue to play from the previous archive, but for me, it’s possible that your squad is too weak no matter which battle it is participating in, and there is no money to make my army stronger. This becomes a problem, because combat usually blocks the path of exploration, so the only option is to start again. This problem is not as serious as the old-school quality, but we should remind new players first: “The King’s Gift 2” is a harsh game and will not give players any tolerance.

But regardless of the changes, the most important quality of the series still exists. “The King’s Gift 2” is a very, very addictive adventure, no matter how long you play, you just want to see where the next battle is. It feels like this is indeed a “Bonus of the King” series. In fact, it is surprising that despite so many shortcomings, it can be ignored, just because the game is fundamentally very interesting.

Therefore, “The King’s Gift 2” is really strange. This is the sequel I want, but at the same time, it doesn’t fully meet the standards. Obviously, this series requires a bit of novelty, and the final product is not bad. Although there is still much room for improvement, I believe there is still a market for ruthless but interesting old-school adventures like this.
