I would have paid the ticket to attend this morning’s meeting at Palazzo Chigi between Mark Zuckerberg and Mario Draghi. On the one hand, the man who brought a few billion inhabitants of planet Earth to social media; and on the other the only political leader to be left out of this circus. Zero followers: Mario Draghi on the net is not followed and does not follow anyone simply because he does not even have a profile on the platforms of Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook and Instagram. And not because he doesn’t know how to use them, but because he knows the risks, highlighted a few days ago by former American President Barack Obama: they are a deformed mirror of reality, which is already complicated enough without needing to be deformed.

Dialogue can be imagined by working with imagination. “Mister Zuckerberg, I supposed” the premier may have said in his perfect English, citing the American journalist who had tracked down a famous explorer in Tanzania whose traces had been lost. And the other might have said taking off the 007 glasses made a year ago with Luxottica: “My name is Zuckerberg, Mark Zuckerberg”.

And after the pleasantries that will be said? One thing is certain: the king of social media hasn’t even tried to convince the premier to reconsider. In the sparse note issued by his team at the end of the meeting it is said that they talked about the metaverse, about the great opportunities for Italy of this new digital dimension that has been constantly talked about since Zuckerberg himself decided to rename his Meta group. because that is our destiny, he says: in a virtual reality.

What then it is not clear what life will be like in there. The day before yesterday Zuckerberg, on his Italian tour triggered by the marriage of a couple of friends in Siena, and which also took him to Milan to meet the founder of Luxottica, visited a legendary Turin chocolate shop saying that “one day we will be able to bring these wonderful flavors to the metaverse ”. Fascinating sentence but without meaning for anyone who has tried the virtual reality glasses made up to now by Meta: fun for the first five minutes but then substantially useless. After all, even those of a secret agent made with Luxottica are for now a failure. Which does not mean that sooner or later we will not adopt them, the paths of innovation are paved with sensational failures.
