June 18, 1928 Amelia Earhart she was the first woman to cross the Atlantic Ocean with a plane and her legend began. On that occasion he was just a passenger. He had received a phone call a couple of months earlier: “Do you want to fly over the Atlantic?”. A year ago he had done it Charles Lindbergh, alone, and the idea was for a woman to try. The first choice was pulled back and so they called her who was 30 and since she was 20 she had discovered that her great passion was flying. The aircraft, a three-engine called Friendship, departed from Trepassey Harbor, Canada and landed in Wales 20 hours and a few minutes later. Amelia said she felt like luggage, or a sack of potatoes, “but I’ll try again on my own.” He did this several times. For nine years she was a star. In reality she immediately became a celebrity: they called her Lady Lindy because she was incredibly similar to Lindbergh, or “the queen of the air”.
On May 20, 1932 she will cross the Atlantic on her own performing a legendary feat (although instead of landing in Paris, as expected, she did so in Northern Ireland). Three years later he was the first ever pilot to fly solo from Hawaii to California; and then from Los Angeles to Mexico City and from Mexico City to New York. She broke all the records and at a certain point she had only one thing left: to go around the world. He worked on it for years, and in July 1937, on his second attempt, the plane he was flying on disappeared from parts of Howland Island in the Pacific. She was declared dead in January 1939 but according to some legends she had only disappeared, or ran away, and had started a new life.
Hollywood dedicated a film to her that should have been a triumph, but was instead a flop. Sure his life deserved a better movie. She was a model of a new role for women in society (“the woman who will find a job, will have fame and fortune” she said; and again: “women should try to do what men do and if they fail that failure it will only be a limit to overcome “). And it was an example of courage and a sense of adventure. Among his most famous phrases the maxim is often quoted “the best way to do something is to do it”, or even “life is not meant to be a passenger”. But my favorite remains: “Everyone in life has an ocean to cross in flight, if only they have the courage to do so.”
