CREMONA – The effects of the pandemic are transversal to all aspects of daily life. To account for this is the new study

Nearly three-quarters of consumers, 74% to be exact, say they changed their eating routine during the pandemic

that theEngageMinds HUB, the research center ofCatholic University, is carrying out with an action on the field that for issues and arguments is trying to map the impact of Covid on the habits and consumption in the broad sense of Italians. It is a work directed by the teacher Guendalina Graffigna, full professor of Consumer and Health Psychology committed to studying the behavior of the population in times of pandemics, the aftermath and changes induced by the health emergency of this year and a halfO. «Covid-19 has also impacted our eating habits: almost three quarters of consumers, 74% to be precise, say they have changed their eating routine during this year and a half of pandemic – explains Graffigna -. And this starting with meals at home, given that in recent months, according to the calculations of our center, 63% of the Italian population has increased the consumption of food cooked at home.».

emerges from the analysis of the Cattolica – 53% of Italians say they have increased the consumption of ‘healthy’ products and 40% have undertaken a more varied diet. «Among the foods that provide the consumer with a sense of greater safety, those based on organic products stand out – underlines Professor Graffigna -. Our research center has recently carried out a focus on these products in the field of Omic-Eng project of the Catholic University. From the analysis of our data, there is confirmation of a trend in recent years according to which organic consumption has now largely come out of the niche phase, so much so that 82% of citizens declare high or average consumption of ‘organic’ food ‘, and only 18% say they rarely buy them“. But the EngageMinds HUB study goes deeper. And if on the one hand it reveals that 72% of Italian citizens know at least one of the certifications in force in Italy in the field of organic food, the analysis of the reasons that push consumers to ‘organic’ choices is of particular interest. “They are a sense of security and trust that moves 68% of Italians to buy these products, but an almost as high share, 64%, perceives a higher quality in organic food”, continues the professor at Cattolica.

environmental pact, and 62% believe them to be more ethical. “It is clear to everyone how the pandemic has changed our habits and how this has happened in different areas of our daily life – comments Guendalina Graffigna -. However, it should be emphasized that eating habits are particularly important, because they are linked to our lifestyles and our well-being; knowing how to manage them is therefore essential. Because of this, since March 2020, our research center has activated a continuous monitoring on the impact of Covid-19 on our lives precisely to provide on the one hand scientifically based keys of interpretation on what was and is happening to us and, on the other , to guarantee suggestions aimed at redirecting those behaviors that may prove unfavorable to us».
