The pandemic causes cyberattacks to explode. Eugene Kaspesky: “Traditional cybersecurity will soon be obsolete”

Making a common front to better counter the next generation cyber attacks that threaten Europe. This is a bit like the goal that the countries of the Union set themselves to achieve cyber immunity. A much debated topic, a few days ago, during the EU Cyberpolicy Forum. One of the protagonists of the forum, Eugene Kaspesky (CEO and founder of the company of the same name) granted himself exclusively to the notebooks of the Sole 24 Ore. And we asked him, first of all, how the world of cybersecurity has changed with the pandemic. What if this change will last forever.

“The pandemic has empowered cybercriminals and created new challenges for businesses. Both the time spent online and the number of possible activities on the web have increased and this has led to a significant increase in risks because let’s not forget that anything that attracts users’ interest cannot be ignored by cybercriminals. Before 2020, we detected around 360,000 new malicious files per day ”.

«Today – he continues – we are witnessing a 25% increase in digital crime worldwide. Threat actors and cybercriminals have adapted to the situation generated by the pandemic and used the associated circumstances to their advantage. I would also like to point out that one of the most important security risks is the global transfer of employees from offices to remote work. This change has given cybercriminals the ability to reach home devices and networks, which in most cases lack adequate IT protection. Users who intend to protect themselves must first of all become aware of the new risks of remote work ».

How have companies responded to these new risks?

“For some organizations the adaptation process has been easier, but to some extent we are all facing some technical problems that have arisen due to the mass effects of the pandemic. The reality is that no company, public sector entity or individual should consider itself safe from cyberattacks, especially in a context like the present one where remote working has become a necessity. When it comes to adapting business processes to the new reality (at a time when employees are experiencing a moment of uncertainty caused by the Covid crisis) the company has a fundamental role which consists in keeping its employees updated by providing training courses on safety. But to be effective they need to be part of a joint effort by both the organization and its employees.

Is the rapid recourse to remote working, imposed by the pandemic, a problem for the world of work?

“As I said, we have had the opportunity to observe an increase in the activity of cybercriminals who have worked to exploit the situation and attack the corporate resources that have been made available (very often in a hurry) to employees to allow them to work remotely . Remote working gives hackers a unique opportunity to target devices, especially those that don’t have effective IT security measures. Furthermore, organizations now face not only the increase in network traffic remotely, but also the use of third-party services for data exchange.
