The plan of the Italian islands to become Covid free

by admin

With the “digital green certificate”, the new name of the immunity passport, the dream of creating real happy islands becomes more real. The legislative proposal of the European Commission to facilitate safe free movement within the EU during the pandemic could in fact fulfill the desire of the islands that aspire to the status “Covid free”. Far from the nightmare of the pandemic, partially protected by a “shield” made up of millions of cubic kilometers of water, these “paradises” could restart the Italian economy.

Change could start with Sardinia, for example, already the only Italian region to have been labeled “white zone”. Or, even earlier, from the smaller islands: the Aeolian Islands with Lipari, Stromboli, Vulcano, Alicudi, Filicudi, Panarea and Salina; the Egadi with Favignana, Levanzo, Marettimo; the Pelagie with Lampedusa, Linosa and Lampione (which, however, is not inhabited); but also Ustica and Pantelleria. These islands have already shown how much easier it can be to contain outbreaks in small realities like theirs. And who are strongly motivated to follow the example of the very first place in Europe to be “Covid free,” the Greek island of Kastellorizo.

All inhabitants vaccinated

The famous location of the film Mediterraneo by Gabriele Salvatores, in fact, vaccinated all its inhabitants. First and second doses of the Pfizer vaccine. Kastellorizo is today a happy island because it is safe from Sars-Cov-2. A status that the Athens government intends to make the most of in view of the tourist season. In fact, as early as May, the doors of Kastellorizo could open to all people with a “digital green certificate”. It will therefore be a precious document, to which only vaccinated people or those who prove to be negative on tests or to be cured will be able to aspire. Like the green pass Israeli, so to speak, which has allowed the country to return to normality.

Not all governments in Europe agree and will discuss this at a meeting next week. In China, on the other hand, the “vaccination passport” has already been officially announced. They are also ready to follow suitIndia, the Great Britain he United States. For their part, the Italian islands aim at the status of “Covid free” and thus be able to welcome as many “immunized” tourists as possible. The mayors who administer them therefore ask to speed up the vaccination. “Vaccinating the inhabitants of the smaller islands of Sicily immediately is the right way to prepare them for the summer tourist season”, says the councilor for productive activities of the Sicilian Region Mimmo Turano. “Covid free – continues Turano – is the watchword to really help the economy of our smaller islands. Immediately vaccinating the population of the Sicilian islands means protecting their health but also giving these territories the opportunity to come out of the crisis with their own hands by fighting on equal terms with the competition of Greece which is already immunizing the inhabitants of the more touristy islands. Lampedusa and Linosa should be the first islands to be immunized, it is important that Pantelleria, the Egadi and the Aeolian islands follow closely ”.

Scientists seem intrigued by the idea of creating Covid-free islands, but are skeptical about the real success of this strategy. “The idea of thinking about islands and environments in which infections are zero could be useful, above all to restart the economy linked to tourism”, he says Paolo Villari, Professor of Hygiene and Director of the Department of Public Health at the La Sapienza University of Rome. “But at this moment it seems premature to me, because it would lead to discriminatory situations. It would be better – he continues – to wait for the conclusion of the vaccination campaigns ”.

The idea of a health passport does not convince Villari. “First of all, it is necessary to evaluate how much a strategy of this type can actually affect the progress of the pandemic – he underlines – the main problem would however be that of discrimination because currently not everyone has had access to vaccinations, and establishing a strategy of this type would preclude series of opportunities to a significant part of the population “. The epidemiologist is equally skeptical Stefania Salmaso, former director of the National Center for Epidemiology, Surveillance and Health Promotion of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità. “It seems to me a wrong idea, I don’t know how much it can hold up – he says – and in any case, at least for now it seems to me a random speech. It will be necessary to deepen in the future ”, concludes the scientist.
