The (rich) paycheck of GPs

by admin

The general practitioner is one of the main figures of the national health system but above all the closest to the population. There are almost 44 thousand of these doctors who deal directly, on a daily basis and on the territory with the control of the health of Italians. In fact, under the responsibility of this professional there is the entire health and psychological life of his clients in the hope of avoiding useless (according to the statistics) rushes to the emergency room with related blockages.

Many duties, responsibilities all for a fee that often remains mysterious. We therefore tried to understand how much the paycheck of this professional and medical figure is.
These professionals, on the payroll of the National Health Service, can reach a gross monthly salary of € 7500 per month which varies according to the number of their clients. Then there is the bonus issue that affects the total for each month.

General practitioners’ salary and bonuses

The general practitioner normally receives about 70 euros gross for each user if he has fewer than 500 patients and 35 euros if he has a higher number of patients. The ceiling is 1,500 clients, a number which can therefore lead to a salary exceeding 7500 euros per month gross, excluding any bonuses. But what are these bonuses and how much are they?

For example, for the vaccine against Covid, each doctor receives 10 euros per dose if the injection takes place in their own clinic and a good 28 euros if, on the other hand, it is necessary to go to the home of the patient unable to move. The salary for flu vaccines, on the other hand, varies from 6 to 10 euros. Assuming that a doctor carries out an average of 500 vaccinations, the bonus he receives will be between 3 and 5 thousand euros. A good deal.

But the bonuses don’t stop there. Tampons are also an additional source of income. In fact, for each test carried out they receive 18 euros. But that’s not all, another 18 euros are foreseen for home visits of their patients or nursing homes. While another service paid directly by their patients is that of mandatory certificates required by law for school, sports or work, which can range from 30 euros to 50 euros. Added to this are the increases for seniority, the contributions for those over 75 and any allowances for nighttime availability. In short, in the months where these bonuses are more likely (September for example for sports and schools), it can reach 10 thousand euros gross per month.

Working hours

As a rule, the general practitioner with 1500 patients works three hours a day, 5 days a week. With a thousand assisted 10 hours a week and 5 hours with 500 assisted. To these hours must be added the various telephone availability for recipes and appointments as well as home visits and extra activities.

Confrontation with hospital doctors

A doctor who works in a public hospital has a lower salary than the general practitioner; in fact, he can earn from 2,000 to 4,000 euros based on length of service and a head physician earns from 4,000 to 6,000 euros compared to 38/48 weekly work with a daily schedule of up to 13 hours a day. Very sensitive differences that lead many doctors to search for the most convenient place.
