While the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 are fairly evenly matched, the same cannot be said for the previous generation of consoles. Playstation 4 and Xbox One sales are 2:1. So what about the latest generation?
Well, Microsoft doesn’t provide hardware sales numbers anymore, but they used to. Thanks to this and yesterday’s mention by Phil Spencer that the Xbox Series S/X sold better in its first year than any previous Xbox console, we now have some clues about the sales numbers.According to a senior analyst at renowned Niko PartnersTwitter:
“By our estimates, this will bring Xbox Series X|S shipments to over 12 million units. Amid supply chain issues/semiconductor shortages, the dual SKU strategy has paid off for Microsoft. Compared to X only, Increasing the production of the S will allow more Xboxes to hit the shelves.”
Siny’s latest wave of official figures on Playstation 5 sales shows that the model has sold 13.4 million units. Of course, it sold several million more units over the fall and Christmas period, and Forbes estimates the new Playstation 5 will sell around 15-17 million units in total. While the Playstation 5 still has a clear lead, it’s not that far behind the previous generation, and in fact they’re almost neck and neck again.
