On the occasion of the seventeenth edition of Rare Diseases Day which this year will be celebrated all over the world on February 29th, a rare day for rare disease patients, the coin, created by the State Polygraphic Institute and Mint for the Numismatic Collection, will be officially presented of the Italian Republic 2024 and dedicated to the 25th anniversary of UNIAMO, the Italian Federation of Rare Diseases.

The coin will be presented during the event organized in Rome in Piazza della Pilotta 4 at Roma Eventi – Trevi Fountain, on 29 February 2024, which retraces the long #UNIAMOleforze awareness campaign started on 1 February at the Ministry of Health where they will discuss all the players involved in the “rare” system.

“This very important recognition fills us with pride and confirms that the Federation plays a fundamental role for the community of people with rare diseases. The history of this coin starts from a fortuitous meeting with Luca Fornara. A person of great humanity who immediately took our cause to heart, recognizing its value. Luca left us two years ago, but the seed that he planted, thanks to those who continued to take care of it, bore the fruits that we reap today. Thanks Luca, this world misses you, but our coin will be a concrete souvenir in your memory.” This is the comment of UNIAMO President Annalisa Scopinaro.

The coin, with a nominal value of 5 euros, has a circulation of 7,000 pieces and is presented in the Uncirculated version.

Created by the engraver Claudia Momoni and produced at the Officine della Zecca dello Stato, the work depicts the official UNIAMO logo on the obverse, surrounded by a series of small, hollow balls, to indicate rarity, one of the many nuances of human community represented with a circle of larger balls, in relief, and on the reverse the Logo of Rare Disease Day, established in 2008, depicting some hands in which a human silhouette is set, in the centre, to represent solidarity towards people with rare disease.
