The success of the Green Pass, digital things done right

by admin

By dint of complaining we have lost the ability to appreciate beautiful things. When they happen, when they change. Take the green vaccination certificate, the Green Pass. In these hours they are coming to sixteen million Italians emails with instructions to download it. It is a well-written email, with a clear and essential language that indicates in a rather simple way how to obtain “the green Covid-19 certification”.

From a site, via the Immuni app resurrected to new life, or on the IO app he has just passed the privacy test. There is also a toll-free number from 8 to 20 for technical assistance. And the beauty, let me say, the wonder, is that this thing works. It is not trivial. It means that there is a single registry of vaccinated people, that there is an IT platform that sorts the data and generates the authorizations, and that there are 3 working digital tools to download them: a site and two apps.

I may have a short memory but maybe it’s the first time that in Italy a large-scale digital operation works. Until now we were those of click-days, of sites that blocked for too many requests, or that started publishing the data of citizens taken at random by mistake, or of apps that were impossible to use, or of instructions so bizarre as to make the bureaucracy.

For years we have been able to create files even online, practically an oxymoron; and to develop modest technology that is in fact unusable and unused. Instead in this case we have the IO app that is finally becoming the tool to be digital citizens; the Immuni app which, in spite of a bogus narrative, had been well developed and had not worked only due to non-technological political incapacity; is a government site that already from the homepage shows everything we need.

Behind this success are the former boys of the digital team of Diego Piacentini (here the original list), which in the meantime have become the backbone of the Ministry for Digital Transition and of PagoPA, the company that manages IO; and there are the Sogei technicians, which in recent years had not always stood out for its modernity.
