PS5 players are finally waiting for good news, as Sony is planning to release a variable refresh rate (VRR) feature for the PlayStation 5 “in the next few months.”

The long-awaited VRR feature will synchronize the display’s refresh rate with the PS5’s graphics output and will reduce visual artifacts, screen tearing issues. Players will even be able to use the new VRR features in games that aren’t officially supported.

The PlayStation team said in a post on the official blog: “Many PS5 games will feel smoother to play because contextual rendering is real-time, graphics look sharper, and input lag is reduced. Previously released PS5 games can be updated through game updates. VRR is fully optimized, and future games may include VRR support at launch.”

Sony says it will also allow PS5 owners to apply VRR to games that aren’t officially supported. “This feature may improve the quality of some games,” Sony explained. “If this causes any unexpected visual effects, you can always turn this option off.” A second option for VRR for unsupported games will be available in the PS5’s screen and video settings, and can be toggled along with enabling VRR itself.

This could be a great way to improve a game like Elden Ring, which had performance issues when it launched in the PS5 version. Sony didn’t mention an exact release date for VRR beyond the next few months, but the company has publicly tested its previous system software update, so testing could begin soon.

Sony also released new PS5 and PS4 software updates that include the ability to create or join open or closed groups on the PlayStation console. The PS5’s game base and trophy cards also get some UI enhancements, and the headset supports mono audio. PS5 owners in the US or UK can also test out the new voice command feature, which lets you find and open games or apps and control media playback with your voice.
