According to what emerges from data from the Communications Observatory, disseminated by the Communications Authority, in Italy it continues the negative trend of traditional publishing.

In the month of March 2021, the sale of newspapers (paper copies and digital copies overall) amounted to approximately 50 million copies, down 9% on an annual basis. With reference to the entire period considered (March 2017 – March 2021), the daily paper copies overall, sold by the main publishers fell from 50 to 29 million units, with a contraction of 42%.

At the same time, the digital copies they show a sharp decrease if we consider the entire period (-8 percentage points), but increase if we consider the values ​​of March 2020 (+7 percentage points).

How did it go online
Analyzing the internet usage data, in March 2021 as many as 44 million average daily users surfed the Net for a total of 66 hours of monthly browsing per person. Turning to the audience examination of the main social networks, Facebook, with 35.9 million unique users and a decline on an annual basis (-2.5 million surfers), it is confirmed as the main platform used; countertrend performances are found exclusively for Pinterest (+3.1 million users) e TikTok (+3.4 million users).

How it went for the televisions
In the television sector, with an increase in its share compared to March 2020 (+1.4 percentage points), the Rai confirms its leadership in terms of audience (4.3 million viewers on an average day) and reaches a share of 37.5%. In second place there is Mediaset, which with 3.7 million viewers on an average day recorded a decrease in the share (-0.3 percentage points), which stood at 31.8%. In the same period, negative performances for Comcast / Sky (-0.6 percentage points) and La7 (-0.6 percentage points), while Discovery is stable.

In contrast with +2 percentage points, the ratings obtained by other operators, which overall reached 14.2 percentage points.

As for the analysis of the evolution of the audience ratings of the evening editions of the main information programs (i news broadcasts, that is) on the average day, Tg1 and Tg5 are among the most popular (overall with about 11.3 million listeners); in third place is the evening edition of the local Rai 3 (Tgr) publication, with a share of 15.3%.
