In the course of our pages we have often investigated what are the factors that predispose to the formation of various tumors. For example, we looked at how this very common factor can increase the risk of developing lung cancer. Today we will instead analyze how these common pains could indicate the presence of a liver tumor. Let’s get started right away.
A particularly deadly tumor
Not everyone knows, but liver cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the world. In fact, in 2012 alone, it is estimated that 700,000 people died due to this disease. In Italy this type of cancer is rarer than in other countries but not for this reason to be underestimated. As reported by the AIRC it is estimated that as many as 8900 men and 4000 women are affected every year. As for the male sex, the incidence of this disease increases significantly in men over the years. In fact, in men under 45 there are on average only 3 cases out of 100,000, since it rises to 62 in the over 75s.
Factors predisposing to the disease
It is not yet clear what are the processes that lead to the development of this particular type of liver cancer. Yet, as reported by the AIRC, there are some elements that can predispose to the development of this neoplasm. Among these, cirrhosis, the presence of chronic hepatitis B and C infections, smoking and excessive weight stand out. In addition, men and people over the age of 50 are more prone to these diseases.
These common pains could indicate the presence of a liver tumor
Unfortunately, there aren’t many symptoms that indicate liver cancer. This pathology is in fact defined as silent, as it tends not to show symptoms, especially in the initial stages of development. Over time, however, fairly common symptoms may appear that should still sound an alarm bell. Among these are the presence of pain in the upper abdomen that can also spread to the back and shoulder area. In addition, one should beware of a thickening of the abdomen accompanied by nausea, loss of appetite, weight loss and a general feeling of satiety. Additional symptoms related to this pathology are yellowing of the skin (jaundice) and the presence of fever. Symptoms, as specified above, quite common and also attributable to other health problems. For this reason it is important to consult a doctor who is able to competently analyze the situation.
