Three doses protect from Long Covid, even with Omicron – Health

With 3 doses of mRNA vaccine it is more protected from Long Covid, regardless of which variant we are affected by. In fact, the second and especially the third dose reduce the prevalence of long-lasting symptoms to 16%, compared to 42% that occurs on average in the unvaccinated population.

To say the results of a study published in the famous Journal of the American Medical Association (Jama), which involved 2,560 health workers from 8 Humanitas hospitals in Lombardy and Piedmont, before and after the arrival of anti-Covid vaccines.

Long Covid is defined as the persistence of at least one symptom of SARS-CoV 2 infection for more than 4 weeks. The aim of the study was to identify the protection of the vaccine against this condition in subjects positive for the virus. In this sense, the hospital population was found to be ‘ideal’ because it was vaccinated, subjected to research tests for Sars-CoV-2 every two weeks and to serological tests, which also made it possible to identify asymptomatic patients.

From March 2020 to April 2022, the research then photographed the state of their immune systems during the succession of different variants, including Omicron, and the effects of the vaccination campaign. “The research followed the pandemic and, from the results, we could see that the prevalence of Long Covid increased from 41.8% when vaccines were not yet available, to 16% of those who were vaccinated with 3 dosesregardless of the variant “, explains lead author Maria Rescigno, head of the Humanitas Mucosal and Microbiota Immunology Laboratory.

“We investigated over 40 symptoms with a questionnaire of over 200 questions submitted to 2,560 people – explains Elena Azzolini, Deputy Health Director of Humanitas -. The most frequently encountered were fatigue, weakness and headache. The study also found that, all ‘increase in the number of comorbidities, but above all allergies, the risk of developing Long Covid is more significant, regardless of vaccinations “.
