Thus it is possible to “talk” with those who sleep

by admin

We know them mostly by the memory they leave, when they leave it, and if we are able to recall it. We also know something of what happens on a neurological level, but in some ways dreams are still something mysterious. And to get to know them one of the methods could be to interact with someone who is dreaming, while he is sleeping. Why is it possible to do it, says a study published today on the pages of Current Biology, in an active way, so much so that those who dream can even answer math operations that are asked of them by someone awake. Establishing a real dialogue. To the point that researchers call this possibility of real-time communication with us a sort of “interactive dream”.

Thus the brain “turns off” the surrounding world during dreams

Simone Valesini

“For a long time it was believed that sleeping people were unaware of the world around them, that their senses were actually asleep, allowing only the strongest stimuli to enter, making understanding and dialogue impossible – reads the paper – but this vision must be updated ”. The arguments advanced by the scientists in support of their thesis are the results of their own experiments of interrogating dreamers, carried out on 36 people, in sets set up in four different countries (USA, France, Germany and Holland). One of the participants was narcoleptic, some were lucid dreamers (meaning they were aware they were dreaming), others had had few experiences of lucid dreaming but were trained to do so, the researchers explain.

The smell of the partner gives deep and regenerating sleep

Per speak with participants during sleep and dreams, scientists, guided by Ken Paller of Northwestern University, they used signals of different nature, verbal, tactile or light. In turn, the participants could respond to the researchers’ requests using codes: the movement of the eyes or facial muscles. The answer was somehow encoded in the sense that a certain eye movement corresponded for example to Morse code signals according to a previously agreed correspondence between dreamers and experimenters. The Morse signals referred to in turn could correspond to the answers to some questions (such as mathematical questions). Questions that the participants did not know in advance.

Sleeping with your partner improves sleep and memory

What the researchers observed in their experiments is that it is indeed possible to open a dialogue, speak with those who sleep and dream, and receive answers (that the participants were really sleeping was also confirmed by analysis of polysomnography data carried out by impartial experts, the authors specify). “Evidence of bidirectional communications was observed in all three categories of participants – say the authors – and both during night sleep and during daytime naps”. Not always, mind you: in the paper the authors explain that it is not always easy to establish an interaction, and how sometimes there were no answers, others were wrong, but still others were unequivocally correct, to the point that, finally, they write: “all of our results are proof that it is possible to achieve two-way communication during sleep, and this opens the way to a new approach for the scientific study of sleep”.
