Tratti di Respiro: illustrated stories to tell about lung cancer

by admin

We often hear about lung cancer, given that with its 34 thousand deaths every year (in our country alone) it is one of the main big killers of oncology. But what does it really mean today to live with this disease? What emotions accompany the diagnosis, and what are the subsequent phases of the treatment process? And how are the therapeutic innovations of recent years revolutionizing the life expectancy of patients? It is these questions that he wants to answer “Breath traits“, The new campaign launched today by Roche, with the patronage of WALCE Onlus (Women Against Lung Cancer in Europe) and IPOP Onlus (Together for Pulmonary Oncology Patients), which combines the creativity of five illustrators with the stories of eight patients , to turn the spotlight on the many facets of the disease.

Each patient is unique, each tumor is different

In fact, when we talk about lung cancer, we often think of a single disease. In reality, there are many forms of lung cancer, characterized by specific distinctive features, and which today can often be treated with personalized drugs that greatly improve the prognosis and quality of life of patients. “Fortunately, great progress has been made in the diagnosis and treatment of this pathology, with the identification of genetic characteristics of the tumor cell that allow an increasingly personalized therapy for each patient”, he explains. Maria Rita Migliorino, UOSD Head of Pneumology with Oncology Address of the San Camillo-Forlanini Hospital and Advisor to the Board of WALCE Onlus. “The research and determination of these mutations, a sort of ‘identity card’ of the disease, allow the clinician to direct the patient towards a personalized and appropriate therapeutic path”.

How the illustrations were born

Parallel to drugs and therapies, each disease story is also a unique story, a multifaceted testimony of the path that those who are facing lung cancer take. To combine these two aspects, the campaign brought together eight people with lung cancer, three caregivers, a medical oncologist and professional illustrators – Boban Pesov (@bobanpesov), Roberta Guzzardi (@rob_art_illustrazioni), Luca Laudito and Marco Rocco (@intimodistacco) e Giovanni Esposito (@gio_quasirosso) – who have interpreted life stories, turning them into eight digital paintings. The meeting between patient associations and illustrators took place during a “co-creation” workshop held in July 2021 in Milan, documented in a video reportage. “The Tratti di Respiro campaign wants to tell about lung cancer through a new language – commented Stefania Vallone, Secretary of the management of WALCE Onlus – capable of giving life to emotions and stories going beyond words, also aiming to undermine the false myths of disease through the direct testimonies of those who face this challenge every day “.

The Breath Breath Campaign

Throughout the month of October the illustrations will be shared, two each week, on the social profiles of the illustrators involved in the project, while some Instagram influencers – Gianluca Pistore, Lucrezia Montrone e Marzia Welcome (@cronachediunabionda) – they will give their support to the Campaign through dedicated posts and stories. Instead, users of the digital community will be asked to participate by creating the design of a balloon and writing a message for the protagonist of one of the stories, to make it a story to share on Instagram or Facebook using the hashtag #TrattidiRespiro, tagging at least one of the illustrators involved. The messages received will converge in a final collection that will be released in November, on the occasion of the month dedicated to raising awareness on lung cancer.
