Turin 20 July | Diagnosis and treatment of tumors with a needle

A needle to diagnose and treat cancer, this is the future of world theranostics and the brain of this revolution in the world of health is in Turin. Those who have studied the technology that will be installed inside the tip of that needle find themselves in Aurora – one of the most talked about neighborhoods in the city – inside the laboratories of Teoresi, a leading company in the nanotechnology sector.

The hospital of the future in a needle is the motto of the Nanocan project – this is the name of this experimentation – and summarizes the concept behind it: “The project involves the use of optical fibers inside a medical needle to the development of integrated theranostics platforms to lead us to a prototype of a medical device that is able to integrate therapy and diagnosis, which informs the patient about the best therapy on that tumor and which gives an answer to the main problems related to the therapies anticancer drugs today “, explains Beatrice Borgia, Teoresi’s Chief Corporate Development Officer.

The needle inside is composed of functionalized optical fibers that through solid and liquid biopsy allow to make a diagnosis, moreover it is able to inform exactly about the type of pathology and to bring the drug where it is needed, in the necessary quantity and in the least way. invasive. “This allows to reduce some problems related to the therapies currently on the market that are delivered in a systemic way and not in a precise way”, continues Borgia.

The project is currently being tested on breast and liver cancer case studies. “The needle integrates many different machines. Today diagnosis and therapy are done at different times and with different machines, this is a sort of laboratory integrated inside a tip of a needle”, adds Beatrice Borgia, “it will potentially replace some machines, reduce the time between diagnosis and therapy, but also bring an advantage to the national and international health system “.

However, the crux remains one and it is the economic one, is a technology of this type sustainable for the national health system? “Our role is to generate technologies that are sustainable because we cannot ignore the context, even that of public health which we know is increasingly complex”, concludes Borgia, “the new innovations will have to take into account not only the impact on the patient, but even that on the health system “.

Leading the Nanocan project, acronym of Nanophotonics for the Fight Against Cancer, is CeRICT (Regional Information Communication Technology Center), a research organization made up of a consortium of different operating units, whose purpose is to design and implement services and products with innovative characteristics, with a view to integration with the activities of Universities, Public Research Centers, Companies and Industrial Research Centers.
