Ukraine Russia, news. Russian missiles on Dnipro: at least 9 dead and several injured. LIVE

The EU Foreign and Defense ministers will meet next Monday in Luxembourg for a Foreign Affairs and Defense Council, the so-called ‘jumbo’. On the table, among other things, will be military aid to Ukraine, in particular air defense systems. Kiev needs them to defend itself from Russian bombings: according to Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas, they asked for “six” Patriot surface-to-air missile systems and there are enough of them in Europe to deliver them to the Ukrainians; Germany has already supplied one from its own stocks. Yesterday German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, while not detailing which European countries the other six will come from, hoped that the “decision-making processes” will be concluded “soon”, because “time is of the essence”.

A European diplomatic source explains that, in the absence of Patriot, one should look at “the full range of available air defense systems. Patriots are the most sophisticated, but there are other systems that can be very effective”. Member countries should therefore “look at their arsenals” and find the systems Kiev needs, because, even if they wanted to, a Patriot system (produced by the American Raytheon) cannot be manufactured in a day: delivery times are quite long .
